Controls Strategy Lead (SCADA/Ignition)

Merck seeks a Controls Strategy Lead to define and deliver laboratory SCADA and orchestration platforms across Development Sciences and Clinical Supply. This role combines strategic technical leadership with hands-on design and implementation of Ignition-based solutions, guiding the organization's digital infrastructure for laboratory automation and data integration.
Responsibilities
- Define vision, roadmap, architecture, and standards for SCADA and orchestration capabilities across the organization
- Design, develop, and deploy complex Ignition and integration solutions for critical programs
- Establish reusable architectures, governance frameworks, and validation approaches connecting instrumentation and enterprise systems
- Evaluate emerging technologies and translate AI, analytics, and digital twin opportunities into platform capabilities
- Coach and mentor colleagues through project engagement, training, and communities of practice
Requirements
- PhD in Engineering, Robotics, or related field with 6+ years relevant experience, OR MS with 8+ years, OR BS with 10+ years
- Significant experience designing and deploying industrial or laboratory SCADA and orchestration platforms
- Demonstrated expertise with Ignition, DeltaV, WinCC OA, or similar industrial automation platforms
- Proven ability to lead technical strategy while remaining an active individual contributor
- Experience with modern software practices: version control, testing, CI/CD, maintainable architectures
- Strong communication skills presenting technical concepts to scientific and leadership audiences
- Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, and developing technical talent
