The Opportunity: Sentara Health is hiring six (6) BOC-certified Athletic Trainers for a newly awarded partnership with Portsmouth Public Schools. Each position serves as the primary Athletic Trainer at an assigned middle or high school in a 12-month, school-coverage-only role with full medical benefits. Apply strength and conditioning principles across a diverse, multi-sport population. Work with professional autonomy while receiving support from Sentara Sports Medicine leadership and fellow Athletic Trainers. Core Responsibilities: Prevent, evaluate, manage, and rehabilitate athletic injuries under the direction of the team physician. Manage return-to-play and return-to-performance progressions. Maintain electronic injury records and oversee daily athletic training room operations. Provide emergency care and medical coverage for practices and competitions. Serve as a liaison among athletes, coaches, parents, physicians, school leaders, and Sentara leadership. Middle school Athletic Trainers assist high school Athletic Trainers throughout the year. PPS Middle Schools offer 9 different sports across 3 seasons to include: Football and Cheerleading in the fall; Boys' and Girls' Basketball, Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball, Cheerleading, and Wrestling in the winter; and Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer, Track, and Softball in the spring. PPS High Schools offer 15 different sports across 3 seasons to include: Football, Cross Country, Cheerleading, Field Hockey, Golf, and Boys’ & Girls' Volleyball in the fall; Boys' and Girls' Basketball, Cheerleading, Indoor Track, Swimming, and Wrestling in the winter; and Baseball, Soccer, Tennis, Track, and Softball in the spring. Qualifications: BOC certification as an Athletic Trainer and licensure in Virginia, or eligibility to obtain licensure. Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills. CSCS certification is welcomed and valued but is not a requirement. Why Sentara?
