The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. Description of Work This position involves constructing, relocating, maintaining and repairing secondary underground electric distribution lines and systems to support VIPER sites statewide. Responsibilities Responsibilities include installing and maintaining up to 350KW stand‑by generators, switchgear, transformers, and related electrical components, as well as performing preventative and corrective maintenance on backup emergency power systems. Work is performed under the supervision of a VIPER Network Engineer and reviewed by NC DOI inspections. The role requires flexibility for long hours, the ability to work independently or with others, and coordination with vendors for supplies and repair parts, with a focus on developing expertise in emergency power systems. Construct, relocate, and maintain secondary underground electric distribution lines and related components to support VIPER sites statewide. Install, maintain, and repair electrical system components, including up to 350KW stand‑by generators, switchgear, transformers, and associated equipment. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on stand‑by and emergency generators according to the VIPER maintenance schedule. Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to obtain necessary parts, equipment, and materials for system maintenance and repairs. Work independently or with team members to complete tasks, ensuring compliance with NC DOI inspections and developing expertise in backup emergency power systems. Salary and Location Salary Range: $45,431-$61,625 Salary Grade: NC11 This position is located at: Lenoir County/ Eastern North Carolina Other Requirements Qualified recommended applicant(s) must undergo and successfully pass Criminal Background Investigation and Drug Screening Test Management. Must have or be able to acquire valid North Carolina Driver's License. Must have considerable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the electrical trade. Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade. Ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment. Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Minimum Education and Experience High school or General Educational Development diploma AND two (2) years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey level tasks associated with two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades. OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Qualifications May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F. Position / Physical Requirements Typical work schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm (based on department needs). May require night and/or weekend work during maintenance windows or outage situations. Subject to emergency callback at any time. Extensive statewide travel is required at times.
