Clinical Research Nurse, Pediatrics

Overview The Clinical/Research Nurse specialist works in a strategic role in the Maternal/Child HIV Program and as a Research Coordinator within the Section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. In the role of clinical nurse, this position provides integration of clinical and educational service. The major responsibilities include maintaining a leadership role in the prenatal, pediatric HIV and research activities of the section of pediatric infectious diseases, integrating clinical care, patient education and access to research protocols appropriate for the BMC population. This position identifies, follows and educates HIV positive women about targeted programs for antenatal, intra-partum and post-partum care for both mothers and infants transitioning into the Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic. The position also identifies eligible clinical study subjects, obtains medical history, informed consent, phlebotomy and specimen processing, and requires experience in reviewing potential research protocols, preparing and initiating clinical trials, and ensuring research activities comply with good research practice. Assesses the patient, collects pertinent data, prioritizes information to meet immediate needs, and develops an appropriate care plan. Follows up with Maternal and Child HIV/AIDS Team Staff. Contributes to and actively participates in departmental quality assurance reviews and monthly clinical patient review. Provides follow up care in person and via telephone; coordinates with pharmacy and the ID/AIDS team for medication orders, prescriptions, refills, and communication. Conducts initial assessment and intake, obtaining social, medical, mental health, substance abuse and medication history. Clinical Research Responsibilities Works with Pediatric ID Faculty to implement protocols, maintain protocol integrity, monitor participant status for safety, and educate clinical staff and trial participants. Assists with recruitment/retention of research subjects and provides patient education regarding protocol participation and adherence; ensures the integrity of the informed consent process. Drafts study subject consent forms, data collection forms, budget worksheets and IRB applications as needed; coordinates screening, enrollment, scheduling of procedures, and follow-up visits. Completes and evaluates case report forms; submits them to protocol sponsors within required timelines. Performs data checks, edits, and monitors timeliness of data submission to sponsors; manages all aspects of clinical data collection, research progress, adverse events, informed consent, and care related to study treatment. Maintains the clinical research database. Coordinates sponsor site visit audits, prepares audit materials, and responds to audit reports in a timely manner. Ensures IRB and Pharmacy involvement in study protocols per BMC policies and procedures. Provides supervision to Laboratory Assistant and Data Manager as needed; may assist Medical Director and PI with performance feedback. General Communicates clearly in writing and orally, and complies with departmental policies when documenting patient care data. Collects pertinent data using appropriate assessment techniques. Complies with hospital and regulatory standards (FDA, Sponsor, OHRP, etc.) regarding patient rights and care; supports hospital values in decision making. Follows hospital policies and procedures, including infection control and safety measures. Job Requirements Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse; maintain RN competencies annually; phlebotomy experience (pediatric and adult).
