OrthoTrauma Stepdown / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana

Shift: Nights (7:00 PM 7:30 AM)

Schedule: 3 x 12-hour shifts per week (36 hours)

Contract Dates: July 19, 2026 October 17, 2026

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join the OrthoTrauma Stepdown Unit at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. The RN will provide specialized nursing care to orthopedic and trauma patients requiring close monitoring and advanced clinical support in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) setting. This position is a night-shift opportunity supporting float pool coverage due to staffing needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive nursing care to orthopedic, trauma, and post-surgical patients in a stepdown environment.
• Monitor patient conditions, assess changes, and respond appropriately to clinical needs.
• Administer medications, treatments, and therapies in accordance with physician orders and hospital protocols.
• Collaborate with physicians, therapists, case managers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate patient care.
• Interpret cardiac monitoring and recognize changes requiring intervention.
• Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
• Adhere to patient safety, infection prevention, and quality care standards.

Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum of 12 years of recent PCU, Stepdown, Telemetry, Trauma, or Orthopedic nursing experience preferred.
• Experience caring for post-operative orthopedic and trauma patients.
• Current BLS certification required.
• ACLS certification preferred or required per facility guidelines.
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced acute care environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous OrthoTrauma Stepdown experience.
• Travel nursing or float pool experience.
• Experience with telemetry monitoring and high-acuity patient populations.
