I) Job Purpose

The Licensed Therapist, reporting to the Director, provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and adults with significant mental, emotional, or behavioral challenges. This role primarily serves individuals in Specialized Services Programs, including those at risk for or involved in the justice system or transitioning from residential treatment centers, state hospitals, or inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities. The Licensed Therapist collaborates with families, caregivers, and community supports to deliver client-centered care, support service eligibility, prevent out-of-home placement, and promote long-term independence, with work hours that may include evenings based on client needs.

II) Essential Functions

A) Conduct face-to-face or virtual intakes, (in office, community or residence) assessments and diagnosis for initial and annual eligibility determinations, in the center or community for Specialize Programs.

B) Service Delivery: May deliver a minimum of 20 hours of direct and/or case management services to assigned clients per week (adjusted based on hours worked and mileage reimbursement for direct service staff) at the clinic, community or virtual.

C) Assessment and Treatment Planning: Complete initial assessments and make referrals for follow-up care; maintain current assessment and treatment plans for assigned clients.

D) Documentation: Thoroughly document all treatment provided; draft progress notes with clients and finalize them in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) by the next business day, using correct service codes for services provided.

E) Team Collaboration: Attend weekly coaching sessions with supervisors, team meetings, and any required training approved by the supervisor; provides feedback on clinical processes, and reports incidents or concerns to management.

F) Serve as the Licensed Practitioner for the Healing Arts (LPHA) to assess and diagnose clients, and provide individual, family, and group counseling using approved modalities and curricula.

G) Conducts initial face-to-face assessments to determine eligibility for MHMR services, including diagnostic evaluation according to guidelines.

H) When applicable, complete Mental Health Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) or Adult Needs and Strengths Assessment (ANSA) and any other screenings or scales as required.

I) Maintain knowledge and compliance for CANS / ANSA and service line eligibility.

J) May provide crisis intervention and develop follow-up care plans, including arranging appropriate care for clients with suicidal or homicidal ideation.

K) May facilitate clinical consultation, ongoing education, and training for unit staff on various topics as necessary ensuring professional accountability.

L) May complete Person and Family Centered Wellness Plans at intake for assigned patients.

M) May perform Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and/or Cognitive Processing Therapy referrals with appropriate follow-up.

N) May conduct quarterly audits of documentation to ensure compliance with requirements and propose revisions for service improvement.

O) Effectively coach youth, families and adults experiencing high conflict and significant dysregulation to a resolution and facilitate repairing relationships among family members.


P) Maintain current licensure and adhere to professional standards set by licensing boards.


Q) Implement triage procedures and inform Director of imminent dangerousness.

III) Knowledge of Laws, Regulations, Policies/Procedures, Skills, and Abilities

A) Demonstrated skill in developing productive relationships with clients, family members, service providers and professional peers and subordinates.


B) Extensive knowledge of the needs and characteristics associated with individuals who are in the target population.


C) Extensive knowledge of case management, habilitation and rehabilitation principles, objectives, standards, and methods.


D) Extensive knowledge of the current DSM criteria and disorders.


E) Ability to work independently and organize work effectively and to prioritize workload demands.


F) Ability to conduct screenings, referrals, intakes, assessments, and unit orientations.


G) Excellent written and oral communication skills.


H) Ability to complete proper documentation/paperwork required for individual chart.


I) Ability to cope with and assist others in coping with frustration and be flexible in meeting organization's workload demands.

IV) Internal & External Customer Service

A) This position requires extensive internal and external contacts. The employee will accomplish this with advanced written and verbal skills.

B) Must demonstrate compassion, trauma-informed care, and safety practices including suicide safe care.

C) Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers, characterized by mutual support, open communication, trust, and respect. Always considering what is best for clients in decisions about treatment and support.

D) Interact and respond in a timely manner using a compassion mindset, awareness of need for felt safety, and consideration of all variables affecting clients and teammates.

E) Work effectively with clients from various cultural, linguistic, socio-economic, cognitive, social-emotional, and educational statuses.

F) Discuss uncomfortable and potentially conflict-producing, stressful topics in a professional and effective manner with internal and external customers and maintain courteous interaction.

V) Travel

A) Adhere to MHMR Mileage and Travel reimbursement policy and any other aspect regarding travel.

B) May require less than 30% travel by personally owned vehicle.

VI) Equipment Used

A) Utilized as required for position.


Minimum Requirements


Minimum qualifications

Minimum Education: Master's Degree

Defined Education: Behavioral Science field

Years' Experience: Two (2) years

Defined Experience: Mental Health services

License/Certifications: In good standing in the state of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Work (LMSW), Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC-A), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFT-A)
