Veterans Services Officer

Veterans Services Officer (NS) Agency: Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, Veterans Affairs Division. Position Number: 60014259, Grade: NC09. Employment Overview Location: Charlotte Veterans Service Center, Charlotte, North Carolina. Salary: $39,671 – $69,426. Work week: 40 hours, Monday‑Friday 8:00am–5:00pm with possible weekend, after‑hours and holiday work. Responsibilities Obtain, compile, and present information related to claims for benefits for veterans and their dependents. Assess needs and file benefits on behalf of veterans and dependents. Assist and coordinate with Veterans Service Officers, Veterans Service Technicians, County Veterans Service Officers, and other related personnel. Act as liaison between the State Division of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, coordinating activities with various VA divisions. Review and interpret current legislation and regulations to determine validity of benefits claims. Present claim briefs before the Board of Veterans Appeals and review Board decisions for grounds for appeal. Participate in civic functions to inform the public about veteran services and rights of dependents. Work on difficult cases, possibly contacting Department of Social Services, lawyers, doctors, and other professionals to obtain necessary information. Provide quasi‑legal assistance to veterans and dependents in securing benefits under federal laws. Travel to counties and districts for public appearances, interaction with veteran organizations, and meetings with federal officials. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Relevant experience: Two years in veterans’ services, human services, or related managerial or administrative work. Documented experience gathering supporting documentary evidence and presenting claims. Experience with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations related to veteran services. Interviewing skills to assess veterans’ needs and determine appropriate action. Leadership experience working with a team of counselors or veterans services officers. Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Documented experience as a veterans advocate. Management Preferences Preferred applicants should have evidence of experience as a veterans advocate and familiarity with VA operations.
