Position Title: Certified Medication Aide (CMA)
Department: Assisted Living
Status: Full-Time / Part-Time

Position Summary

The Certified Medication Aide is responsible for safely administering medications to assisted living residents under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. The CMA also assists residents with personal care and daily activities while promoting dignity, independence, comfort, and safety.

Essential Job Duties

• Administer medications according to physician orders, facility policies, and applicable regulations.
• Follow residents’ medication administration records and document medications promptly and accurately.
• Observe residents for changes in condition, medication reactions, or side effects and immediately report concerns to the licensed nurse.
• Obtain and document vital signs as directed.
• Maintain medication carts, medication rooms, and supplies in a clean, organized, and secure condition.
• Follow proper procedures for medication storage, controlled substances, medication disposal, and infection prevention.
• Report medication errors or discrepancies immediately according to facility policy.
• Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, and dining.
• Respond promptly to call lights and resident requests.
• Provide compassionate care while respecting residents’ privacy, dignity, preferences, and rights.
• Communicate effectively with residents, families, nursing staff, and other departments.
• Complete all required documentation before the end of the assigned shift.
• Participate in shift reports, staff meetings, in-services, and required training.
• Follow HIPAA, safety, infection-control, emergency, and resident-abuse prevention policies.
• Perform other duties within the CMA’s permitted scope and as assigned by a licensed nurse or supervisor.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Current Certified Medication Aide certification or authorization that meets Ohio requirements.
• Current nurse aide certification, if required for the position.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred or required within the facility’s designated timeframe.
• Previous assisted living, long-term care, or healthcare experience preferred.
• Must successfully complete required background checks, health screenings, and orientation.
• Must maintain all certifications and continuing-education requirements.

• Strong observation, communication, organization, and documentation skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Compassionate and respectful approach to caring for older adults.
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies.
• Ability to work independently while recognizing when assistance from a licensed nurse is required.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, reach, push, pull, and lift as required; assist with resident transfers and mobility; and perform the physical duties of the position safely. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for qualified individuals.

Work Schedule

Must be available to work the assigned shift, including weekends, holidays, and additional hours when necessary. Regular and dependable attendance is an essential function of this position.
