ENGINEERING INSPECTOR : PUBLIC WORKS

Summary of Position The Engineering Inspector ensures that Town infrastructure projects comply with approved plans, permits, and standards by conducting field inspections, managing construction activities, and maintaining accurate records. This role responds to public inquiries, maintains archival data, and may work irregular hours during special events or inclement weather, with remote work options available. FLSA- Non-Exempt What are the safety considerations for this job? This position is considered Safety Sensitive. You will be subject to the Town's Drug and Alcohol-free Workplace policy. You are also be subject to the Town's Safe Driving and Accident Policy. What you can expect to be doing (Essential Functions): Performs inspections of Town maintained infrastructure such as, but not limited to, roadways, sidewalks, bridges and various stormwater systems; ensures that construction plans have been Town approved and that permits are in place; maintains inspection records; verifies materials meet Town standards. Inspects fiber optic related projects as well as residential driveways. Note: Water and Sewer Infrastructure are not maintained nor inspected by the Town. Performs inspections by coordinating construction with other Town departments as well as other governmental agencies; ensuring that plans have been approved, and permits are in place Maintains inspection records Verifies materials used meet Town standards Manages projects in the field by holding pre-construction conferences; providing adequate project supervision; interprets drawings; assists in resolving issues; maintaining inspection records. Responds to requests from the public by assisting them in acquiring permits and approvals; assisting Town staff with requests for information; assists public utilities with information on right of way; assists contractors RFI on permit and approval questions. Maintains archival and data retention records by ensuring that all drawings are approved and submitted; maintains a database of commercial and residential building complexes for use by emergency departments. Supports operations during inclement weather and special events, which may require irregular hours, including weekends. Completes all other duties as assigned. Do you supervise or not? This position may supervise and monitor the performance of other employees, or it may not.? What are the physical demands? The work is typically performed in a variety of work environments and requires the ability to traverse adverse terrain, work in heat, cold, and other weather conditions typically encountered in an outdoor environment. The employee is required to do occasional heavy lifting and uses various small tools and may operate heavy equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity with exposure to vibration, noise, and fumes. Where and how do you work? The work is typically performed outdoors in the field at construction sites and in confined spaces. The work may include office work. What do you need to know to do this job effectively? Knowledge of: Applicable federal and state laws, Town ordinances, and department policies and procedures. Building and construction practices for a variety of public works projects. Project management. Civil engineering practices, including hydrology. Road construction, maintenance, and repair procedures and methods. Operation of a variety of equipment. Work zone traffic safety. PPE and basic safety requirements. Ability to: Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents Read and interpret maps, construction plans, and standard details. Maintain records and prepare reports. Use various measurement tools. Use web-based software systems. Use Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or similar tools. Solve problems and make sound decisions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Education An associate’s degree in civil engineering, construction management or in related field .Preferred Experience A minimum of 3 years of experience required.
