Van Driver

JOB PURPOSE:

Provides transportation between campuses, to doctor's appointments, and home on holidays. Transport passengers from place to place along established routes. Operates transit buses, motor coaches, or school buses.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides safe, reliable, and efficient transportation for students and employees on assigned routes.
• Assists with the loading and unloading of passengers.
• Drives bus in all weather conditions.
• Inspects vehicles before driving including gas, oil, water, tires, and brake and transmission levels, to ensure the safety of operation.
• Performs routine safety checks on vehicles to include: operable brake lights, turn signals, tire pressure, first aid kit, and emergency road kit.
• Ensures that all vehicles are maintained in a safe operating condition.
• Schedules routine vehicle maintenance including; oil changes, brake inspection, and wheel alignments, and reports problems or repairs as needed.
• Ensures maintenance and cleanliness of all buses.
• Follows proper procedures and policies when involved in an accident or when a student is injured, ensures accident report is completed promptly.
• Follows all federal, state, local, and tribal traffic and safety regulations.
• Attends all meetings and training pertinent to the job.
• Maintains appropriate student management and reports student incidents to the appropriate supervisors.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with necessary endorsements and be insurable for vehicle operation.
• Navajo Speaking preferred.
• Valid state driver's license.
• Must be able to pass a background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

• Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.
• Knowledge of rules of the road and road signage.
• Knowledge of New Mexico driver and passenger service regulations.
• Knowledge of the community, campus, and surrounding areas.
• Skill in the use of cleaning tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
• Skill in displaying mature, patient, and understanding behavior.
• Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
• Ability to drive safely and efficiently.
• Ability to use a variety of hand tools in performing minor maintenance.
• Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
• Ability to respond to and remain calm in an emergency or crisis situation.
• Ability to safely operate vehicles.
• Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
• Ability to communicate effectively in the Navajo and English language.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Requires the ability to sit for up to eight (8) hours per day.
• Use of back, arms, hands, and legs to operate the bus.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Talk, hear sit, stand; use hands to handle objects, equipment, and controls and reach with arms and hands.
• Ability to lift, push, or pull upwards of 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work is typically performed within a bus.
• Exposure to exhaust and gas fumes may occur when driving or monitoring the buses or vans.
• Exposure to unpleasant odors, hazardous material, and infectious diseases.

• Travel within and outside of the campus area is required.
• Evening and weekend shifts may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
