Principal AI/Agentic Engineer

Abbott seeks a Principal AI/Agentic Engineer to lead design and delivery of production-grade multi-agent systems on its enterprise platform. This player-coach role combines hands-on technical contribution with team leadership of 3–8 engineers, establishing patterns and standards for reliable, observable agentic applications.
Responsibilities
- Design and operate production agentic systems with supervisor, planner, and multi-agent patterns including failure handling and human oversight
- Build durable workflows with persistent state, checkpoints, replay, idempotency, and human-in-the-loop controls
- Engineer tool and function integrations with enterprise systems including schemas, authorization, retries, and failure containment
- Develop evaluation systems with curated datasets, task-success metrics, LLM-as-judge, and regression gates in CI
- Hire, coach, and develop approximately 3–8 agentic engineers; establish testing, code review, and secure software practices
Requirements
- 10–15+ years software engineering with distributed systems and technical leadership experience
- Hands-on production experience designing, coding, and operating agentic or LLM-based applications
- Deep knowledge of agent architecture, tool calling, durable state, context engineering, and safety controls
- Strong Python and at least one of TypeScript, Go, or Java; APIs, distributed systems, CI/CD, testing
- Track record defining and using quality, safety, reliability, latency, and cost metrics to drive improvements
- Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated ability to lead engineers, make sound decisions under uncertainty, and communicate across audiences
Compensation: $149,300–$298,700 base
