Technical Writer

Overview:

The Technical Writer SMARTS Systems supports the development, maintenance, and delivery of documentation materials related to the SMARTS system and associated business processes. This position is responsible for translating technical workflows, system functionality, and operational procedures into clear, user-friendly content to support employee training and system utilization. This role partners with subject matter experts (SMEs), system users, managers, and support teams to develop and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures, workflow documentation, user guides, and reference materials that improve consistency, usability, and operational efficiency across SMARTS modules and business processes.

Description:

Core Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and update technical documentation and instructional materials related to SMARTS applications, workflows, and business processes.

• Translate technical system functionality into accurate user documentation and procedural guides

• Collaborate with SMEs, managers, developers, and support personnel to ensure documentation accuracy and consistency

• Maintain documentation libraries and document version control

• Support process improvement efforts through workflow mapping, visual documentation, and feedback analysis.

Key Duties

• Create step-by-step user guides, quick reference sheets, process documentation, and instructional manuals for SMARTS modules and related systems.

• Create and maintain workflow diagrams, process maps, and visual documentation using tools such as Microsoft Visio or similar applications.

• Work with SMEs and department personnel to gather and validate process information.

• Review and revise documentation to reflect current system functionality, UI changes, enhancements, and business process updates.

• Gather user feedback and identify opportunities to improve documentation clarity.

• Assist with organization and maintenance documentation repositories and learning materials.

Measurable Outcomes

• Develop and maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for assigned SMARTS modules and workflows.

• Ensure materials and process documentation are updated within established timelines following system or process changes.

• Produce clear, organized, and user-friendly documentation with minimal revision requirements.

• Maintain consistent communication and collaboration with SMEs and operational departments to support documentation accuracy.

Qualifications:

• US Citizenship.

• High School Diploma

• 2 years of relevant experience.

• Knowledge of technical documentation, instructional materials development, and business process workflows.

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

• Basic understanding of technical communication principles, document design, and information organization.

• Familiarity with workflow mapping and process documentation practices.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong technical writing and editing skills with the ability to simplify complex information.

• Ability to create presentations, instructional materials, and visual documentation.

• Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and collaboration tools.

• Experience creating process maps and workflow diagrams using Microsoft Visio or similar software preferred.

• Strong proofreading and editing skills.

• Ability to organize complex technical information logically.

• Experience applying document standards, templates, and version control.

• Ability to translate technical concepts into clear, user-friendly language.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and documentation updates simultaneously

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Norfolk, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
