Asst Attorney General 1 - Business & Finance

Overview The Office of the Attorney General Department of Law provides legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers, and employees of state government and carries out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Assistant Attorney General – Business & Finance serves in the Business and Finance Section of the Commercial Transactions and Litigation Division. The primary role involves representing the state in Chapter 7, 11, 12, and 13 bankruptcies across the state and occasionally out of state, including multistate bankruptcies. The position also offers opportunities to participate in general business litigation, including breach‑of‑contract actions, state procurements, the Hospital Acquisition Act, bond proceedings, and Georgia Lottery Prize denials. Responsibilities Appear in state and federal courts to try cases, argue motions and appeals. Research and prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs. Work with expert witnesses. Participate in settlement negotiations. Prepare discovery requests and responses. Provide legal advice and/or representation to client agencies; draft memoranda of advice. Research pertinent legal issues and keep abreast of recent legal developments. Participate in multistate working groups. Review sign‑on opportunities for letters, comments, and briefs. Draft formal opinions in response to legal questions. Respond to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges. Attend continuing legal education seminars as required and make presentations. Travel as required (typically minimal). Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited law school. Membership in the Georgia Bar. Preferred Qualifications Experience in Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcy proceedings. Litigation experience or interest. Strong research and writing skills. Ability to assume primary responsibility for matters and work independently. Employment Status The position will remain open until filled.
