Maintenance Worker I
The City is seeking a motivated and dependable Maintenance Worker I to join its Public Works team. This entry-level position performs a variety of maintenance, repair, construction, and operational duties in support of the City's streets, water and sewer systems, storm drains, parks, buildings, and other public facilities. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, a commitment to public service, and the ability to perform physically demanding work in a safe and efficient manner.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Perform maintenance, repair, and construction activities on streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drains, parks, and public facilities.
- Assist with water distribution and wastewater collection system maintenance and operations.
- Repair leaks, replace water and sewer lines, and perform pipe installation and maintenance.
- Clean and maintain sewer lines and related infrastructure.
- Perform asphalt patching, concrete work, and traffic control activities.
- Install, repair, and maintain traffic signs, pavement markings, and safety devices.
- Maintain parks, landscaped areas, and city grounds through mowing, trimming, pruning, watering, and fertilizing.
- Install and repair irrigation and sprinkler systems.
- Operate a variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles including trucks, mowers, jackhammers, loaders, and other maintenance equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
- Respond to emergency calls, after-hours incidents, and standby assignments as required.
- Provide courteous and professional customer service to the public and fellow employees.
Knowledge of:
- Basic maintenance, repair, and construction methods used in municipal public works operations.
- Safe operation of tools, vehicles, and maintenance equipment.
- Occupational safety practices and procedures.
Ability to:
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn public works operations and maintenance procedures.
- Operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Maintain simple records and logs.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers and the public.
- Perform heavy physical labor in varying weather conditions.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Experience:
Some experience in construction, maintenance, landscaping, groundskeeping, or a related field is desirable.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid California Driver's License.
- Acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.
Physical Requirements:
The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, carrying, and operating equipment. Employees must be able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to heat, cold, traffic, noise, dust, confined spaces, and other conditions associated with public works maintenance activities. Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.
