Lead A&P Mechanic - General Aviation

Location: Farmingdale, NY
Employment Type: Full-Time
Work Arrangement: On-Site
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, with flexibility for additional hours and occasional AOG requirements
Compensation: Depending on experience

Position Overview

Our client is seeking a qualified Lead Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic to oversee maintenance, inspections, repairs, and technical troubleshooting for a fleet of general aviation aircraft.

This position combines hands-on Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) maintenance expertise with technical problem-solving and team leadership. The successful candidate will help maintain aircraft airworthiness, guide junior mechanics, and ensure maintenance work meets applicable safety and regulatory standards.

Specialized avionics installations and bench repairs are performed by an external avionics service provider.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform and oversee scheduled 50-hour and 100-hour inspections, as well as annual inspections when appropriately authorized.

• Complete airframe and engine repairs, routine maintenance, and flight-line servicing in accordance with FAA regulations, applicable Airworthiness Directives (ADs), and manufacturer maintenance manuals.

• Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults involving aircraft structures, piston engines, propellers, landing gear, and electrical systems.

• Conduct systematic fault diagnosis using technical schematics, wiring diagrams, borescopes, compression testers, and other diagnostic equipment.

• Identify underlying causes of maintenance issues and determine appropriate corrective actions rather than relying on unnecessary parts replacement.

• Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior A&P mechanics.

• Provide guidance on appropriate tool use, torque specifications, safety wiring, and inspection procedures.

• Coordinate daily maintenance priorities, electronic maintenance records, and parts inventory.

• Collaborate with management and other maintenance personnel to minimize aircraft downtime and maintain operational readiness.

Required Qualifications

• Valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate.

• At least 3 years of hands-on aircraft maintenance and troubleshooting experience, or 1-2+ years of practical A&P experience combined with a strong mechanical or aerospace engineering background or advanced diagnostic expertise.

• Ability to interpret aircraft maintenance manuals (AMM), Illustrated Parts Catalogs (IPC), electrical schematics, and technical drawings.

• Proficiency using diagnostic instruments such as multimeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, and mechanical gauges.

• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and root-cause analysis capabilities.

• Ability to work independently and provide technical guidance to junior maintenance personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience maintaining Cessna 100-series aircraft or comparable general aviation aircraft.

• Hands-on experience with Lycoming piston engines, including different horsepower configurations and aftermarket exhaust systems.

• Active FAA Inspection Authorization (IA), or eligibility to obtain one.

• Degree, coursework, or technical background in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Engineering Technology.

• Strong communication, mentoring, and technical leadership skills.

• Experience coordinating maintenance activities and maintaining accurate aircraft service records.

Work Schedule & Conditions

• Full-time, on-site position.

• Regular working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM.

• Flexibility is required for occasional additional hours and Aircraft on Ground (AOG) maintenance situations.

• The role involves coordination with management, junior mechanics, and other maintenance personnel.
