Please note that travelers must have a permanent address located more than 50 miles from the health system. The unit consists of 14 private rooms, and it does not have negative pressure capability. This position does not accept first-time travelers. Common patient types include cancer patients, patients with neutropenic fever, and those requiring fluid resuscitation or blood products. Other diagnoses may include medical overflow, patients receiving chemotherapy, and biotherapy. The preferred ratio of registered nurses to patients is 1:4-5. Required skills for the position include PIV starts, NG tube placement and management, and management of surgical drains and chest tubes. While comfort with port accessing is preferred, only experienced oncology RNs will be allowed to perform this task. The unit has support staff available, including CNAs who assist nursing with activities of daily living, bathing, foley care, mobility, turning, and repositioning. The phlebotomy effort is combined between RNs and CNAs with the assistance of an IV team. An IV/VAT team is available, and respiratory therapy is accessible 24/7 but not dedicated to the unit. Hospitalist support is also available 24/7 but is not dedicated exclusively to the unit. In terms of telemetry monitoring, patients are remotely monitored if telemetry is ordered. The technology used includes electronic medical records, IV pumps, medication dispensing systems, and patient monitors. Unit-specific equipment includes bladder scanners and EKG machines. Floating is allowed within the region and the scope of practice. If a traveler is required to float mid-shift, they will be compensated for travel time between facilities. Schedulers will require travelers to work every other weekend and 75% of holidays. Requests for time off can be approved for up to six days, excluding holidays, with a requirement to add time to the end of the contract if the contracted hours are not met. Shift times vary within a schedule cycle of six weeks. The unit culture is professional and team-oriented.
