Account Coordinator - public relations agency

Mahoney Communications Group (MCG) is a NYC/Manhattan-based PR and public affairs agency that has worked exclusively with cleantech, energy, critical minerals and climate technology companies for more than 17 years. Our clients are venture-backed companies building batteries, carbon removal, grid software, advanced materials and more, along with the climate VC firms that fund them. We keep their news flowing between funding rounds and get them in front of the reporters who matter, from the Wall Street Journal to Forbes to the trade press.

We're hiring an Account Coordinator to support our account teams. You'll work across several client accounts, reporting to an account executive, and you'll learn the agency business from the ground up: media lists, monitoring, pitching, reporting and client service. This is an entry-level role built for someone who wants to grow into an Account Executive and beyond.

What you'll do:

• Build and maintain targeted media lists for each client, covering national business, tech, energy and climate trade reporters
• Run daily media monitoring and send clients clean, timely coverage reports
• Draft first versions of press releases, media pitches, briefing documents, social posts and award submissions
• Track reporter beats and recent stories so pitches land with the right person at the right time
• Help pitch reporters and follow up on outreach, with growing ownership as you build relationships
• Prepare briefing books for client interviews, including reporter background and likely questions
• Keep client calendars, editorial calendars, speaking opportunities and award deadlines up to date
• Take notes on client and internal calls and turn them into clear action items
• Pull together monthly and quarterly results reports
• Research clients' markets, competitors and the policy issues shaping their sectors
• Support new business work, including research on prospects and help with proposals
  

What we're looking for:

• 0 to 2 years of experience in PR, communications, journalism or a related field (internships count)
• A bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience
• Strong, clean writing. You can turn a technical idea into plain English that a reporter would want to read
• Genuine curiosity about climate, energy and technology. You don't need to be an engineer, but you should want to understand how a battery or a carbon capture system works
• A habit of reading the news every day and knowing who covers what
• Organized and reliable with deadlines across several accounts at once
• Comfortable picking up the phone and talking with clients and reporters
• Working knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office; experience with Cision, Muck Rack or Meltwater is a plus
• Nice to have: newsroom or student paper experience, coursework in environmental science or policy, or time on a campaign or in a government office.
