Job Title: Endoscopy Technician I Profession: GI Tech Specialty: Surgical Techs Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 8 and 10 hours Experience: No endoscopy experience required License: High School Diploma / GED Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support, SGNA-GTS - SGNA GI Tech Specialist or SGNA-GTS-P - SGNA GI Tech Specialist - Provisional within 90 Days Must-Have: Ability to read, write, and speak the English language; Strong customer service and interpersonal skills; BCLS required; Ability to collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care; Competency in all aspects of GI procedures; Ability to multi-task; Strong detail orientation; Proficiency in all general GI procedures is required. Description: The Endoscopy Technician I has either no experience in endoscopy or is a novice in the endoscopy setting. The technician assists the nurses and physicians in providing care for the endoscopy patient. They must complete competencies for all basic GI procedures and scope reprocessing. The technician supports the area with duties that include preparation of the procedure room and sterile field to ensure a safe patient care environment. This includes gathering all required instruments and supplies and serving as an endoscopy procedure assistant. The job also includes transportation of patients and equipment, stocking and maintaining supplies, care and maintenance of endoscopes and their accessories. They contribute to the daily functions of the unit and have a strong sense of infection control in the GI setting. Proficiency is required for all general endoscope procedures, equipment, and supplies, including cleaning endoscopes and accessories. The technician fulfills all essential functions of the GI Lab Technician and functions in all areas of the Endoscopy lab. They prepare for scheduled, emergent, urgent, and add-on endoscopic procedures by ensuring necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are ready and set up for use. The technician has the skill to expedite and organize preparation for unexpected events, giving direction and support to less experienced team members. They function independently within the scope of the position and anticipate the needs of the physician and nurse during procedures. They must also be proficient in operating all equipment in GI and providing technical assistance during procedures by troubleshooting equipment as needed. They may be required to take emergency call after normal operating hours and weekends as needed. The technician demonstrates in-depth knowledge of infection control principles and standards and takes a proactive role in quality improvement monitoring and plans. Effective and professional communication skills are essential because collaboration with team members is necessary. The technician assists with planning daily assignments and distribution of work to promote department efficiency. They assist in the trial and evaluation of new equipment and supplies. They function in a manner aligned with goals for quality care, patient satisfaction, professional standards, and safety. Maintaining confidentiality is crucial. The technician supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability and must maintain current BLS certification and SGNA certification. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. All requirements must be met, including successful completion of training within specified timeframes.
