Description : The Counselor is responsible for conducting psychotherapy, crisis management, educational programming, and referral to community agencies as needed.  This is a full-time, 10-month appointment.

Responsibilities :

  • Provide assessment, individual and potentially group therapy as well as treatment planning to a diverse student population
  • Provide crisis intervention services during regularly scheduled work hours, serving as a primary responder for student mental health crises when on campus.
  • Maintain confidential files of students, completing paperwork in a timely manner according to state laws and ethics
  • Participate in weekly supervision or case consultation groups based on licensure status.
  • When needed, provide training for Area Coordinators, Peer Counselors, Campus Safety, Resident Advisors,
  • Faculty, Staff and others Serve on various committees, attend meetings and collaborate with other departments on campus
  • Receive referrals from students, parents, faculty, staff and others.
  • Participate in Continuing Education/professional development to ensure best practice with students
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Participation in significant campus activities including Welcome Weekend, True Blue Weekend, and Commencement Weekend.
  • As a representative of the College, must comport oneself in a professional manner at all times, both on and off campus
  • Comply with all applicable College, Federal, State, local and associational laws, rules and regulations.

Qualifications :  Minimum requirement for this position is a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling or Social Work from an accredited college or university.  A focus on clinical studies is preferred.  Must be licensed (LMHC or LCSW) or eligible for a Clinical License in the State of New York (i.e. a limited permit or a LMSW) with education and training in Mental Health Counseling or in Social Work. Clinical license to be acquired within 3 years of start date.

Must have demonstrated effectiveness in addressing the mental health, developmental needs, and overall well-being of late adolescents/early adults.  Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality and engage in best practices to support student growth and development. Experiene with electronic medical record documentation.  Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills, as well as a high level of communication across multiple disciplines and age groups. Requires the ability to work independently, and also as part of an interdisciplinary team.  Skills and experience in disordered eating, neurodiversity, sport psychology and trauma are a plus.

Confidentiality
All personal information given by a student in counseling will be considered strictly confidential and not shared with the student’s family or others without the student’s written consent in compliance with state and federal law.  Exceptions to this principle would include situations in which the student is perceived to be a danger to themselves or to others, or if a child is in danger. In such cases, information is shared on a need to know basis with the Senior Vice President for the Student Experience, other appropriate college staff and the family in order to formulate a prompt and safe treatment plan or emergency response.

Special Circumstances
Candidates should demonstrate experience supporting individuals in high-stress or challenging situations and possess knowledge of appropriate de-escalation techniques. The role requires professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to supporting students who may be experiencing significant emotional or behavioral concerns.

The position may involve situations that are complex, urgent, or crisis-related, requiring careful attention to detail and adherence to professional ethical standards, including the Counseling Code of Ethics and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics. The ability to remain calm, respectful, and effective under pressure is essential.

When scheduled to work on campus, counseling staff serve as the primary point of response for student mental health crises. This includes being prepared to assess and respond to urgent or emerging crisis situations as part of regular job responsibilities during assigned work hours.

Pay Range : $40.00
