Medical Temporaries, Inc. is currently seeking an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to support a growing Department of Surgery.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a LPN.

This is a FULL TIME/TEMP-to-HIRE position requiring availability between the hours of 8am-4:30pm, Monday through Friday, located in Norfolk, VA (23507), supporting a busy surgical practice with a focus on providing high-quality clinical support to surgeons, advanced practice providers, and patients. This position will provide clinical support to patients with complex surgical needs, including Surgical Oncology, Acute Care Surgery, Trauma, and Emergency General Surgery.

The LPN will play an important role in supporting patient care, particularly for patients requiring post-operative assessment, triage, education, follow-up coordination, and assistance with office procedures. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, clinically confident, highly organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Responsibilities:

A Day in the Life of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):

As a Licensed Practical Nurse, you will provide direct clinical support to surgical patients while working collaboratively with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and administrative staff. The LPN will assist with the coordination of patient care throughout the surgical process and will serve as an important clinical resource for patients experiencing post-operative concerns.

This position requires the ability to recognize patient needs, appropriately triage concerns, provide patient education, coordinate follow-up care, and escalate concerns to the appropriate provider when necessary.

The LPN will also assist with office-based procedures, nurse visits, patient communication, documentation in the electronic health record, and other clinical responsibilities within the LPN's scope of practice.

Duties for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):

• Provides compassionate, professional clinical support to patients in a busy surgical practice.
• Fields and appropriately triages post-operative patient calls regarding wounds, fevers, pain, symptoms, drains, and other post-operative concerns.
• Assesses patient concerns and determines the appropriate level of care, including telephone management, urgent clinic evaluation, or referral to the Emergency Department as directed by established protocols and the provider.
• Communicates patient concerns and clinical information to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Provides patient education regarding wound care, drain care, medications, post-operative expectations, and other aspects of the patient's treatment plan.
• Coordinates follow-up care and provides reminders regarding appointments, laboratory testing, imaging, procedures, and other recommended care.
• Assists with scheduling follow-up appointments, laboratory testing, imaging, procedures, and consultations as appropriate.
• Assists with office-based surgical procedures, including sterile tray set-up and preparation of the clinical environment.
• Provides nurse visits and clinical follow-up within the LPN's scope of practice.
• Assists with obtaining and documenting patient information, vital signs, medical history, and surgical history as appropriate.
• Documents patient information, telephone encounters, clinical interventions, and other pertinent information accurately in the EPIC electronic medical record.
• Assists with EPIC work queues and other electronic documentation requirements as assigned.
• Communicates effectively with patients, families, providers, and other healthcare team members.
• Supports timely access to care for surgical patients and assists the clinical team in maintaining efficient clinic flow.
• Recognizes changes in a patient's condition and appropriately communicates concerns to the provider.
• Works collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and administrative surgical coordinators to provide comprehensive patient care.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
• Provides excellent customer service and contributes to a positive patient experience.
• Demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and sound clinical judgment in a fast-paced environment.
• Must be willing to cross-train in clinical tasks as indicated.
• Must be able to work effectively during high-volume clinic days and prioritize multiple clinical responsibilities.
• Other duties assigned as needed.

Requirements for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):

• Required: Valid Virginia LPN License or valid multi-state LPN licensure.
• Required: Practical nursing degree from an accredited nursing school.
• Required: BLS/CPR certification.
• Required: Previous experience in a surgical, oncology, outpatient, or clinical setting preferred.
• Preferred: Experience with post-operative patient care and telephone triage.
• Preferred: Experience with EPIC or another electronic health record system.
• Required: Ability to pass Background Check and Drug Screen.
• Required: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Required: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Required: Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a busy clinical environment.
• Required: Excellent active listening and patient communication skills.
• Required: Ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with urgent or stressful patient situations.
• Required: Strong clinical judgment and ability to recognize when patient concerns require escalation to a provider.
• Required: Must be compassionate, personable, dependable, and patient-focused.
• Required: Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
• Required: Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
• Required: Ability to accurately document patient information in an electronic medical record.
• Required: Must be a quick learner and able to adapt to changing clinical needs.
• Required: Ability to perform duties within the LPN's scope of practice.
