Job TitleResponsible for operating heavy equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, alongside hand and power tools to ensure the safety and efficiency of the water treatment plant.General Description and Classification Standards:Responsible for operating heavy equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, alongside hand and power tools to ensure the safety and efficiency of the water treatment plant. Responsibilities include transporting waste containers to landfills, servicing vehicles, assisting maintenance mechanics, and addressing various plant needs. Additionally, the role involves responding to 311 calls regarding sewer spills, odors, and cleaning catch basins, as well as performing maintenance and repair work on sewer mains and stormwater lines. Duties extend to construction tasks such as framing, landscaping, and material procurement, with occasional operation of a roller for asphalt. The role encompasses pre-inspection and maintenance of fire hydrants throughout the distribution system, ensuring citizens have fire protection. As a crucial part of the watershed division, the worker serves as a first responder to sewer overflow incidents and blockages, managing critical situations to maintain the city's sewer system integrity.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerform skilled construction and maintenance work supporting various public works projects, including street construction, water, and wastewater system operations, and building maintenance.Execute assigned tasks using power and hand tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy-duty construction equipment.Assist in prioritizing and completing work orders efficiently and effectively.Inspect and repair water mains, manage traffic control during water main breaks, and perform water tap installations.Maintain and repair fire hydrants throughout the distribution system, including pressurization testing, material procurement, and maintenance tasks.Clean catch basins, remove debris from sidewalks, and ensure the safety of work areas for both crew members and the public.Conduct pre-trip inspections on vehicles, pull plat cards for specific maintenance areas, and input job locations into GPS for efficient navigation.Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of department policies and procedures: Knowledge of general site safety as it pertains to water/wastewater operations and maintenance. methods, products, tools and equipment used in water/wastewater maintenance and construction work; of basic mathematical principles.Skill: in operating a variety of light to heavy power equipment (jack hammer); in maintenance of tools and equipment (pumping equipment, hydraulic excavator, concrete socket).Ability: to understand and apply pertinent policies, procedures and regulations; to perform maintenance activities involving skills in the functional fields to which assigned;Ability to communicate diplomatically with crew members successfully address concerns.Ability adapt to changes in work environment.Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience -High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).No prior experience required.Licensures and Certifications - Water Collection System Operator License, Water Distribution System, Operator License, OSHA 30 certification, Class B CDL License.Preferred Requirements - Wastewater Collection.6 months of experience in construction and/or maintenance in a water distribution or wastewater collection system.Lifting Requirements:Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.It is the policy of the City of Atlanta ("COA") that qualified individuals with disabilities are not discriminated against because of their disabilities regarding job application procedures, hiring, and other terms and conditions of employment.
