Pharmacy Technician

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable, detail-oriented, and patient-focused Pharmacy Technician to join our pharmacy team.

The Pharmacy Technician works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and assists with the accurate and efficient processing, preparation, packaging, labeling, and distribution of prescription medications. This position also supports prescription intake, insurance processing, inventory management, patient communication, pharmacy documentation, and day-to-day pharmacy operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prescription Processing & Preparation

• Receive and process prescription and refill requests in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and pharmacy policies.
• Accurately enter prescription and patient information into the pharmacy management system.
• Retrieve medications from inventory for prescription preparation.
• Count, measure, package, and label medications accurately.
• Prepare prescriptions for pharmacist review and final verification.
• Assist with prescription refills and refill requests within the permitted scope of practice.
• Review prescription information for completeness and refer questions, discrepancies, or clinical concerns to the pharmacist.
• Maintain an organized workflow to ensure prescriptions are processed accurately and efficiently.
• Assist with preparation of medications for pickup, delivery, mailing, or other approved distribution methods.
• Follow established procedures for handling controlled substances and other medications requiring additional security or documentation.

Patient & Customer Service

• Greet and assist patients professionally and respectfully.
• Obtain and update patient demographic, insurance, allergy, and other required information.
• Answer incoming telephone calls and route clinical or medication-related questions to the pharmacist when appropriate.
• Communicate prescription status, pickup information, delivery information, refill status, and other non-clinical information to patients.
• Assist patients with routine questions regarding pharmacy services.
• Refer questions regarding medication therapy, side effects, drug interactions, dosing, or other clinical matters to the pharmacist.
• Maintain a professional and compassionate approach when interacting with patients, caregivers, prescribers, and healthcare professionals.

Insurance & Billing

• Process prescription insurance claims accurately.
• Enter and verify insurance information.
• Identify rejected pharmacy claims and assist with resolving routine billing or insurance issues.
• Communicate with patients regarding copayments and other applicable prescription charges.
• Contact insurance companies, prescribers, or other authorized parties when necessary and within the technician's permitted scope.
• Maintain accurate documentation related to prescription billing and insurance processing.

Inventory Management

• Receive, unpack, verify, and properly store medication and pharmacy supply orders.
• Monitor pharmacy inventory levels and notify appropriate personnel of low-stock items.
• Assist with medication ordering and inventory management.
• Rotate inventory according to expiration dates.
• Identify expired, recalled, damaged, or otherwise unusable medications and follow established procedures for their removal.
• Maintain accurate inventory records.
• Assist with inventory counts and reconciliation.
• Maintain medications according to required storage conditions.
• Monitor refrigerator or other temperature-controlled storage areas when assigned.
• Assist with medication returns and wholesaler/vendor processes.

Pharmacy Operations

• Maintain clean, organized, and appropriately stocked pharmacy work areas.
• Operate pharmacy computer systems, prescription processing systems, scanners, printers, automated dispensing equipment, and other pharmacy technology.
• Assist with opening and closing pharmacy procedures as assigned.
• Maintain prescription records and pharmacy documentation according to company policies and applicable requirements.
• Assist pharmacists and other pharmacy personnel with daily operational activities.
• Prepare prescriptions designated for delivery and coordinate with pharmacy delivery personnel when applicable.
• Maintain appropriate documentation for medications transferred to delivery personnel.
• Complete assigned administrative and clerical pharmacy duties.

Patient Safety

Patient safety is a primary responsibility of every member of the pharmacy team.

The Pharmacy Technician must:

• Accurately identify patients and prescriptions.
• Exercise exceptional attention to detail when preparing medications.
• Immediately report suspected medication errors or discrepancies to the pharmacist.
• Never independently make clinical decisions outside the authorized scope of a pharmacy technician.
• Never provide medication counseling unless specifically permitted by applicable law and appropriately authorized.
• Ensure prescriptions receive required pharmacist verification before being dispensed.
• Follow established procedures designed to prevent medication errors.
• Immediately report medication loss, theft, diversion, damage, or other security concerns.

HIPAA & Confidentiality

The Pharmacy Technician will have access to confidential patient information and Protected Health Information (PHI).

The employee must:

• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient information.
• Comply with HIPAA and all applicable privacy and security requirements.
• Access patient records only when necessary to perform authorized job responsibilities.
• Never disclose patient information to unauthorized individuals.
• Protect computer passwords, pharmacy system credentials, and electronic information.
• Properly secure and dispose of documents containing confidential information.
• Immediately report suspected privacy or security incidents.

Unauthorized access, photographing, copying, sharing, disclosure, or discussion of patient information is strictly prohibited.

Controlled Substances & Medication Security

When applicable to assigned duties and permitted by law, the Pharmacy Technician may assist with controlled-substance inventory and processing under appropriate pharmacist supervision.

Responsibilities may include:

• Following established controlled-substance procedures.
• Maintaining accurate documentation.
• Assisting with inventory counts.
• Immediately reporting inventory discrepancies.
• Maintaining medication security.
• Following procedures designed to prevent diversion, loss, or unauthorized access.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Pharmacy Technician registration, license, certification, or trainee status as required by applicable state law.
• Ability to satisfy all applicable pharmacy technician regulatory requirements.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Basic mathematical skills.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to use computers and pharmacy software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous pharmacy technician experience.
• National Pharmacy Technician Certification, such as PTCB or equivalent, when applicable.
• Experience in retail, community, specialty, long-term care, mail-order, or other pharmacy settings.
• Experience with pharmacy management or prescription processing software.
• Experience processing pharmacy insurance claims.
• Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial prescription insurance plans.
• Experience with medication inventory and ordering.
• Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.

Physical Requirements

The position may require the employee to:

Employment Requirements

Employment may be contingent upon successful completion of applicable requirements, including:

• Verification of identity and employment authorization

• Completion of pharmacy compliance and safety training
• Completion of company orientation and required competency training

Schedule

The Pharmacy Technician must be able to work assigned pharmacy operating hours. Depending on business needs, schedules may include weekdays, evenings, weekends, or holidays.
