The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified applicants who are interested in a career opportunity in county government as a Detention Officer. The employee will provide protective service and human support ensuring for the care and security of inmates housed at the Montgomery County Detention Center.

A Detention Officer's responsibilities are to include but not limited to standing for long periods of time, walking 100 yards or more 24-36 times in a 12 hour shift and use stairs frequently, heavy lifting, physical confrontations, good communication skills, knowledge of basic computer skills. Examples of Duties


This position processes inmates (including body searches) into the facility. Responsibilities also include inspections to inmates' quarters to insure cleanliness and sanitation, supervises trustees engaged in cleaning, laundering and preparing food. Oversees visitations, inspects items brought to the jail for inmates and checks all incoming and outgoing mail. Must be able to work with each individual firmly and fairly without regard to rank, status or condition of the inmate. The successful applicant must report either in writing or by word of mouth to the proper authorities, those things which should be reported, and must be able to keep silent about matters which are to remain confidential according to the laws and rules of the agency and government. Manage and supervise the inmates in an evenhanded and courteous manner. Should also treat all visitors to the Jail with politeness and respect and do your utmost to ensure that they observe the Jail regulations. Detention Officers must conduct themselves in such a manner that their demeanor, deportment and speech are positive reflections on themselves and the Jail. The Detention Officer is expected to use good judgment, tact and careful attention to detail in doing their duties.

Required Qualifications


Must be a citizen of the United States
Must be a minimum of 20 years of age.
High school diploma or GED -must be included on application
Valid North Carolina Driver's License
Must submit to and clear a background check and drug screen
Must be able to work various shifts
Must not have any felony convictions or certain misdemeanors

EMPLOYEES MUST BE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE N.C. DETENTION OFFICER CERTIFICATION COURSE (DOCC) WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

Salary negotiable for applicants with considerable experience in this position.

NOTE : The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and prior to placement.
Preferred Qualifications


One year of experience in corrections or law enforcement.

Education and/or work experience that demonstrates the applicant has a fundamental knowledge of law enforcement and/or corrections.
