The Department has 11 full-time paid firefighters and a volunteer force. Bastrop Fire Department promotes fire prevention and education, and responds to fire, medical, and rescue calls. The Department's current fleet includes a 100-foot Platform Quint and Engine.
Under supervision of the Command Staff, the Lieutenant performs supervisory and advanced firefighting duties, including emergency first aid, hazardous materials incident management, technical search and rescue operations, fire prevention duties, and the protection of life and property during emergency and non-emergency situations. The Lieutenant, in accordance with departmental regulations and instructions from a ranking officer, is responsible for the coordinating, supervising, and disciplining firefighters, volunteer firefighters, and other volunteer personnel, as assigned. This position provides leadership and guidance to ensure operational readiness, professional development, and effective emergency response.
The Lieutenant oversees the proper maintenance and readiness of fire apparatus, equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure compliance with departmental standards and operational effectiveness. The position may assume command of emergency incidents and is responsible for directing firefighting and rescue operations until relieved by a superior officer. In the absence of a Captain, the Fire Lieutenant exercises direct command over firefighting personnel and equipment.
Work is performed in potentially hazardous environments and may require strenuous physical activity under adverse conditions. The Lieutenant also completes administrative reports, maintains operational records, and performs related duties as assigned.

Firefighter Selection Process:
The selection process begins with an application period. All applications will be reviewed at time of submission for completeness and minimum requirements. Selected candidates will be notified to take the written exam on July 10, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. Exams will be graded immediately following.
Candidates that pass the written exam will return for the physical ability test. Those with the top combined scores will be scheduled to begin the background process. Candidates who successfully pass the background process will be invited to a panel interview. A conditional offer of employment will be extended to the top candidate.

SUPERVISION
- RECEIVES direct supervision from a member of the Command Staff (Assistant Chief or Fire Chief).
- EXERCISES supervision of the firefighters.

- Performs and supervises firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pump and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
- Performs emergency activities including rescue, administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.
- Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, hazardous materials, and related subjects. Instructs classes in assigned subject areas and promotes firefighter development and training.
- Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
- Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in fire prevention programs.
- Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
- Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, and hazardous materials.
- Presents programs to the public, staff and the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
- Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
- Maintains records such as activities journal, run reports, daily log, and makes other reports and forms as required.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Bastrop and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with other city staff, citizens of Bastrop, and visitors.
- Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and city information, consistent with city employee ethics training.
- Responsible for the promotion of public relations, media relations, and responds to and resolves sensitive public inquiries or complaints as assigned.
- Oversees the regular, scheduled maintenance of equipment, inventory and fleet management maintenance, care, and usage.
- Promotes compliance with associated policies in the maintenance and care of city-owned property and vehicles.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Below are the minimum education, experience, license, certification and credentialing requirements for applicants to be eligible to apply for the Fire Lieutenant position.
- Candidates selected shall serve a minimum of six (6) months probationary period from the date of promotion or hire.
- All Fire personnel are expected to engage in and maintain the highest level of training offered. When training opportunities arise, you may be required to attend and obtain applicable certifications.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a full-time paid firefighter.
- One (1) year of experience as a supervisory level firefighter preferred.
- Fire Officer I Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- Basic Firefighters Certificate from TCFP.
- Fire Instructor Level I Certification from TCFP or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- Intermediate Firefighter or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- EMT-B certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
- Possess and maintain a minimum Texas Class B (non-CDL) Driver's License or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment. Must also maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment with the City of Bastrop.
- Thorough knowledge of the use of firefighting apparatus and tools and the ability to demonstrate their use to others.
- Considerable knowledge of the principals and practices of fire prevention, suppression, and investigation with the ability to apply them.
- Considerable knowledge of the Incident Management System and the functions necessary for incident scene management.
- Extensive knowledge of the geography of the City of Bastrop, the location of streets, the nature and location of hazardous premises, principal buildings, fire alarm reporting equipment and hydrant or other water source locations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other members of the Department, community officials, and the general public.
- Ability to evaluate fires, recognizes danger, and takes the necessary action for the protection of lives and property.
- Ability to conduct training for Fire Department personnel.
- Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, orally, and in writing to groups and individuals.
- Ability to maintain discipline among subordinates in the Department.
- Oral and written communication skills necessary for accurate documentation of various required reports; communicating with the Department, the community officials, and the general public.
- Work is performed in office and field environments.
- May be subject to exposure to extreme temperatures, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, toxic fumes, unstable buildings and structures, fire encompassed surroundings, medical environments, infectious diseases, body fluids, air and water borne pathogens; hazards of emergency driving; hazards associated with traffic control and working near traffic; dangerous animals; and natural and man-made disasters.
