The Assistant Librarian assists the Head Librarian in supervising aspects of the library and participates in all aspects of the School. This includes management of the library’s print and database research materials, researching, curriculum design, and teaching students in collaboration with academic department faculty.Key Responsibilities:Actively supports the mission and charism of the School; demonstrates an understanding of and enthusiasm for secondary education, for girls’ education, and for Catholic educationIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, designs and implements a library program consistent with the mission and charism of the SchoolIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, designs and implements a research skills curriculum for all levelsIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, designs and implements a media literacy component to the library curriculumPerforms other duties as assignedAs Assistant LibrarianIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, oversees the day to day activities of the library to include: monitoring the physical facility and reporting maintenance issues to the Facilities department; maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the facility; monitoring student activity, following opening and closing procedures, and implementing Emergency procedures specific to the library facilityIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, evaluates, selects, and purchases print and non-print resources in support of the academic curriculumIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, evaluates, selects, and purchases popular magazines and books in support of developing habits for life-long learning and readingIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, reviews Library’s holdings periodically to ensure usefulness and appropriateness and acquires and discards holdings as neededIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, creates an inviting environment for students and teaching staff by creating displays and performing readers advisoryCatalogs and processes print and non-print resources via the automated library system (Follett)Checks out books and resources out to faculty/staff and delivers items to faculty/staff mailboxes as needed, and checks in books from faculty/staff/studentsRuns a weekly overdue book report and sends overdue notices to students via email, and following up with students who still owe materialsCommunicates with faculty/staff about borrowed library materials and facilitates collecting unneeded materials back at the end of the school yearMaintains the automated library system (add/delete patrons, runs reports as needed)Shelves print and non-print materialsAs Instructional Support FacultyIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, creates an environment that is conducive to active and participatory learning, resource-based instructional practices, and collaboration with the teaching staffIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, collaborates with faculty in designing research projects that meet the curricular goals of the School, the Library, and teaching staffIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, effectively delivers research and bibliographic instruction and schedules classes for students at every grade level and across disciplinesIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, designs lesson plansIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, assesses student progress by correcting written and online exercises, observing in-class presentations, and with their teachers, reviewing project submissions that utilize research skills and library resourcesIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, works with students individually and in the classroom on how to use the Library and its resources, develop research skills and practice ethical use of informationIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, creates instructional finding guides and organizes physical resources to support assignments and projects assigned by teachersIn collaboration with the Head Librarian, moderates the Student Library Advisory BoardParticipates in professional development activities to stay current with library and educational practicesParticipates in all student activities during the school day, including SGA assemblies, major assemblies, and liturgies; participates in all special school days (Founders’ Day and Diversity Day) and all activities at the beginning and end of the school yearChaperones at least two major activities a year, such as retreats, field trips, or special eventsQualificationsSuccessful candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in education, library and information science, or a related field; master’s degree in library and information science preferred. Must have a minimum of five years of relevant experience; experience in Catholic or independent schools is preferred.
