Public Works Driver II Pay Status: Non-Exempt Requirements Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent, and two years of driving or operating public works equipment, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience. Licensing, Registration or Certification: Background check must be satisfactory. Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid WV driver’s license and a CDL license while in this position. Pre‑employment screenings: Must be passed. Experience: Experience education and/or experience above or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in truck driving, sanitation routes, routine construction and repair activities; ability to perform heavy manual tasks; work safely; interact politely with the public; operate various motorized vehicles and equipment; communicate orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Physical: Must use hands to operate tools; able to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds; standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling; able to meet required physical standards; sight, hearing, speech and smell adequate. Mental: Ability to read, speak and write English; effectively communicate verbally and in writing; project a positive attitude. Supervision Exercised: None. Tasks and Duties Maintains the required confidentiality of all work. Drives and operates large sanitation trucks, tandem axle dump trucks and tractor trailer trucks. Loads, unloads and hauls stone, slag, sand, salt, dirt, debris, garbage, asphalt and other materials. Performs minor equipment maintenance such as oil changes, greasing, washing, tire changing and installation of snow chains. Drives single and dual tandem axle trucks and equipment with a GVW of more than 26,000 lbs. during loading, hauling and unloading of various materials. Responds to public works complaints as assigned by the Public Works Director. Operates snow plows and/or snow blowers, applies salt, calcium and abrasives during snow and ice storms. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking after use. Operates street sweeper, mowing machines, tractors and forklifts. Assists in construction and maintenance projects such as pavement cutting, inlet and drain line cleaning, pipe repair, laying pipe and backfilling trenches. Assists with street paving and using motorized roller. Checks assigned equipment for fuel, oil and water, replenishes as necessary and performs other routine equipment preventative maintenance. Operates bucket high lift truck and performs related assigned tasks such as street light maintenance, traffic light maintenance and tree trimming/pruning. Performs as crew leader on sanitation collection routes, responsible for other employees’ safety and safe operation of the packer units and truck in traffic and close operating conditions. Any and all other duties assigned by the Public Works Director. Measures of Performance Has a thorough understanding of job duties.
