Architectural Historian

Overview Architectural Historian position for a time-limited architectural reconnaissance survey project in flood-prone communities in New Jersey. The Survey Coordinator will plan survey fieldwork, coordinate data collection and processing, coordinate review of survey results by participating agencies, and prepare regular status reports. The position is funded for two years through a cooperative agreement with the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management. It is a full-time role (35-hour work week minimum) and based in Trenton, NJ. Responsibilities Coordinate planning, fieldwork, data analysis, and reporting for the Historic Architecture Reconnaissance Survey project to identify historic resources and establish areas with low potential for historic architecture. Conduct background research and compile summary histories of target survey communities for desktop review and fieldwork planning. Conduct desktop reviews of previously surveyed communities to determine updates to prior data, additional fieldwork, or changes in recommendations. Plan and schedule survey activities, including vehicle reservations, staff schedules and assignments, target communities, and survey logistics for each fieldwork session. Ensure data collected during fieldwork is transferred to appropriate repositories; data products include GPS data, digital images, digital video, and updated GIS datasets. Prepare summary documentation for reconnaissance survey fieldwork and assist HPO GIS staff with GIS data reconciliation and map preparation. Coordinate internal and external survey data review and integrate updates into initial and final survey recommendations; assist in incorporating these into final GIS data products. Provide technical assistance regarding the survey project to internal and external constituents. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of federal historic preservation laws, regulations, and policies. Knowledge of New Jersey architectural history. Knowledge of architectural survey methodology. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems and/or GPS data collection. Familiarity with database management and online data systems. Ability to use digital cameras and photograph architectural resources. Ability to conduct architectural field surveys. Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing conditions and priorities. Strong written and verbal communication skills with good organizational abilities. Valid driver’s license. Preference for candidates with demonstrated professional experience in architectural survey fieldwork, analysis, and reporting. Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat. Experience Required At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or Substantial contribution through research and publication to the field of American architectural history.
