WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Description Clayton County Health District seeks to hire an hourly WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. The counselor will attend breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor and counsel WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by local WIC program. The counselor will counsel women during clinic visits, manage a caseload of prenatal and postpartum mothers, and make routine contact with all clients assigned. They will give breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including providing information about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and troubleshooting breastfeeding concerns. The counselor will maintain accurate and confidential records on all clients and appropriately refer mothers to other resources within the clinic. They will attend and assist with breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding support groups, attend staff meetings as required, and attend breastfeeding conferences. The counselor may also assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Experience as a consumer of Public Health, DFCS or WIC services; AND ability to communicate effectively with other consumers. Candidate must be a current or past WIC participant who has successfully breastfed at least one infant for at least six months. Good written and oral communication skills are essential.
