Bus Assistant

The Metropolitan School District of Washington Township (MSDWT) has a position available for a Bus Assistant. This role is located at the Transportation Center and involves providing safe transportation for students on assigned buses. The work schedule is 6.5 hours per day for 185 days during the school year. The FLSA classification is hourly (part-time) with a salary of $16.00 per hour ($19,240 annually). The primary responsibilities of the Bus Assistant include assisting with the loading and unloading of special needs students, securing seatbelts, wheelchairs, and other devices, and ensuring students are safely fastened to their seats. They will also monitor student behavior, maintain order and discipline, and report behavior issues to appropriate personnel. Additionally, they will assist students by answering questions, providing emotional support, and maintaining accurate records concerning students requiring additional follow-up actions during transportation activities. The Bus Assistant must also obtain CPR and First Aid Certificates and attend mandatory special needs and safety training as necessary.

Candidates should be at least twenty-one years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and have sufficient training and experience to perform assigned duties. They must exhibit good attendance, pass a pre-employment background check and physical, and be able to assist with medically fragile and aggressive children. The Bus Assistant must also be able to bend over on a regular basis, hook up, connect, and secure wheelchairs, carry and lift children in and out of their car seats weighing 50 to 75 pounds, climb up and down stairs, and exit the bus from a height of 3 to 4 feet in case of an emergency.
