Position Overview

The Engineer 1 will support Southern Company Gas's Design organization with engineering activities related to natural gas distribution infrastructure.

The position will assist with the planning and design of gas facilities, mechanical equipment, pipeline components, gas storage or fueling station assignments, system analysis, and construction activities.

This role requires an engineer who is a self-starter, strong communicator, critical thinker, collaborative team member, and sound decision-maker .

The successful candidate should be comfortable working across a matrix organization and collaborating with engineering, construction, operations, project management, and other internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Planning

• Assist with the planning and design of natural gas distribution infrastructure projects.
• Develop engineering designs in accordance with applicable technical standards and project requirements.
• Support the design of pipeline components and related infrastructure.
• Participate in the planning and design of mechanical equipment and systems.
• Assist with developing technical solutions for gas distribution projects.
• Review engineering information, drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
• Support the development and application of engineering design standards.
• Evaluate project requirements and recommend practical engineering solutions.

Natural Gas Infrastructure

Support engineering assignments involving:

• Natural gas distribution systems
• Gas pipelines and associated components
• Gas storage facilities
• Gas fueling stations
• Mechanical equipment
• Distribution infrastructure
• Facility modifications
• System improvements

Apply engineering principles to help ensure infrastructure is designed and constructed safely, reliably, and efficiently.

Pipeline & Mechanical Design

• Perform engineering assignments involving the design and functionality of pipeline products and components.
• Assist with the planning and design of mechanical equipment.
• Support engineering activities involving the maintenance or modification of mechanical equipment.
• Evaluate equipment and system requirements.
• Assist with identifying engineering solutions to operational and infrastructure challenges.
• Coordinate design requirements with other engineering and operational disciplines.

System Analysis & Engineering Evaluation

• Perform system balances to evaluate natural gas system performance.
• Assist with identifying system constraints and low-pressure points.
• Evaluate alternative solutions to system issues.
• Recommend practical engineering approaches based on technical analysis.
• Analyze available engineering data to support project decisions.
• Apply critical-thinking and problem-solving skills when evaluating system performance.
• Assist with determining the best overall solution for identified system needs.

Construction Support

• Provide engineering oversight and technical support for construction activities.
• Assist construction teams with interpreting engineering designs and requirements.
• Respond to technical questions during construction.
• Coordinate with field personnel regarding project requirements.
• Help identify and resolve construction-related engineering issues.
• Support implementation of approved design changes when necessary.
• Assist with ensuring completed work aligns with applicable engineering requirements and project specifications.

Project Management & Coordination

• Support engineering projects from initial planning through design and construction.
• Assist with project schedules, priorities, and deliverables.
• Coordinate engineering activities with internal and external stakeholders.
• Monitor assigned engineering tasks and communicate project status.
• Identify potential project issues and assist with developing solutions.
• Manage multiple assignments while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
• Take ownership of assigned engineering responsibilities and follow through to completion.

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience

Candidates should possess:
Education

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering , preferably:

• Mechanical Engineering
• Civil Engineering
• General Engineering
• Closely related engineering discipline

Experience

• Approximately 1-3 years of progressive engineering experience .

OR

• An equivalent combination of relevant academic education and engineering experience.

Preferred Certification
Engineer-in-Training (EIT)

An Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is preferred but not required.

Candidates who have completed or are progressing toward professional engineering licensure are encouraged to apply.
