Site prep Superintendent

About the Job

Howard Companies self-performs the dirt, stone and underground on jobs our own paving crews finish. When you hand a site off, you are handing it to the guys down the hall, not to a sub you will never see again. That changes how the work gets built.

We are looking for a Site Prep Superintendent to run mass grading, excavation, storm and stone base on commercial and municipal projects across Central Indiana. You own the site from mobilization through the handoff to paving. If you have run dirt as a foreman and want the whole job instead of one piece of it, read on.

What You Will Run

•       Walk every assigned job before mobilization. Verify existing grades, utility locates, access, staging and spoil against the plan.

•       Learn your jobs. Takeoffs, plans, estimates, work orders, cost reports. Know where you stand against budget.

•       Build the project schedule and update it weekly with the Project Manager. Get it to the Project Coordinator.

•       Run mass grading, cut and fill, and undercut. Track quantities against the takeoff as they move.

•       Coordinate survey and GPS machine control. Check the model before anybody starts moving dirt.

•       Run storm and sanitary pipe, structures, and stabilization or undercut work.

•       Coordinate compaction and density testing with the geotech. Do not build on soft subgrade.

•       Coordinate and attend proof rolls on subgrade and on stone.

•       Set stone type, depth and trucking for each phase.

•       Maintain erosion control and SWPPP compliance. Keep the site inspection ready.

•       Catch utility conflicts and existing-condition surprises before they cost a day.

•       Run a clean handoff to the Paving Division. Grade verified, site layout complete, access ready.

•       Give field personnel a clear scope of work every day. No guessing.

•       Attend project and preconstruction meetings when needed.

•       Review and approve timecards daily by 2 p.m. Submit crew sheets to the Project Manager.

•       Complete daily and weekly job documentation. Crew sheets, schedules, sign-offs.

•       On questionable weather days, put eyes on the job yourself. Rain days are catch-up and planning days.

•       Enforce safe work practices and company policy. Every crew, every day.

What You Need

•       Five years in site work, earthwork or underground utilities. Foreman or superintendent time preferred.

•       Read and interpret grading plans, cross sections and utility profiles.

•       Understand cut and fill, soil types, compaction, and when a subgrade will not hold.

•       Working knowledge of GPS machine control. Trimble, Topcon or similar.

•       Working knowledge of the order of operations for building a site.

•       Run several crews and jobs at once without losing track of any of them.

•       Communicate straight with crews, project managers, owners and inspectors.

•       Availability to work variable hours and days to meet job demands.

•       High school diploma or GED.

•       Valid driver’s license and a record clean enough to be underwritten on our insurance policy.

Nice to Have

•       OSHA 30. If you do not have it, we will get you through it after hire.

•       Trench and excavation competent person training.

•       SWPPP or erosion control certification.

•       INDOT or local agency project experience.

•       HCSS, HeavyBid or similar estimating and cost tracking software.

•       Stand and walk on active job sites for extended periods, in all weather.

•       Move over uneven ground, climb, stoop, kneel and balance.

•       Talk and hear well enough to communicate with crews and equipment operators on site.

•       Distance vision and depth perception sufficient to check grade and read plans.

Work Environment

•       Active earthwork and utility sites, including open excavation and uneven terrain.

•       Long stretches driving and sitting in a truck cab between jobs.

•       Regular exposure to open weather, noise, dust and vibration from moving equipment.
