BUS DRIVER (SUBSTITUTE)

THIS POSITION IS DUAL CERTIFICATION AND IS OPEN TO BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CANDIDATES SUBSTITUTE POSITIONS ARE ON CALL/AS NEEDED. HOURS: On Call, 8 Hours/Day (Monday-Friday Split Shift - 6:00A-8:30A, 10:30A-4:30P). BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, Development, and Transportation and/or an assigned lead, operate a school bus, transport students, and perform daily safety inspection of bus equipment. RESPONSIBILITIES Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and regulations related to pupil transportation. Maintain order and discipline among students on bus following District policies; interact with parents regarding questions and concerns. Pick up and discharge students at established bus stops; stop traffic and escort students across streets and roadways as needed; report incidents affecting student safety. Maintain the bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections; check and maintain fuel, oil and water levels, brakes, brake lights and doors; report mechanical defects and malfunctions. Perform scheduled maintenance on bus and assist other assigned personnel with inspections as needed. Transport students with physical and mental disabilities; lift and secure wheelchairs; assist in loading and unloading students with disabilities. Fuel and clean exterior and interior of buses, including removing debris, sweeping and mopping floor, wiping upholstery and cleaning headlights. Maintain records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven and number of children transported; prepare student conduct, incident and accident reports. Utilize two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication. Perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures. Perform related duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Bus Driver classification is distinguished from the Lead Bus Driver classification in that the latter provides training to new and current Bus Drivers, assigns and reviews work, manages overtime rotation schedule, and performs other lead duties. EDUCATION Any combination that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and functions listed above. EXPERIENCE One (1) year of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS None LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Valid California commercial driver's license, Class A or Class B, with Passenger, School Bus and Air Brake endorsements. Type 1 Transit Driver designation. Valid Special School Bus Driver's Certificate. Valid Medical Examiner Certificate approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Valid Pediatric First Aid and CPR certificates. First Aid and CPR certificates required within the first 30 days of hire and must be maintained during employment. Maintain insurability by the District's insurance carrier for liability purposes and provide proof of certifications to Human Resources Services. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments; subject to driving a standard/automatic bus, traffic, adverse weather conditions, and variable hours. Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, mobility of arms, dexterity of hands and fingers, speaking, hearing and visual acuity, lifting up to 50 pounds, kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead. REQUIREMENTS Classification is safety‑sensitive, requires a pre‑employment drug test, and is subject to random DOT drug tests.
