Job Title: Field Engineer Job Description
The Field Engineer conducts field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, and rebar. This role involves traveling to project sites across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and surrounding areas, collecting and transporting samples to the laboratory, and preparing clear, accurate reports for project leadership. The position offers a six‑month contract‑to‑hire opportunity with the potential for permanent employment based on performance and growth.
Responsibilities- Perform field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, rebar, and sediment.
- Collect samples from job sites and ensure each sample is properly labeled and accompanied by accurate identifying documentation.
- Transport material samples safely and efficiently to the laboratory for further testing and analysis.
- Conduct inspections on reinforced concrete, structural masonry, spray-applied fireproofing, roofing, and other structural materials as required.
- Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in written and digital formats for daily transmittal to the Project Manager.
- Provide clear documentation of findings and results, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all reports.
- Communicate effectively with the Project Manager, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractors, and other stakeholders regarding site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection results.
- Discuss the accuracy of collected data with the Project Manager prior to formal submission and adjust documentation as needed.
- Adhere to strict safety standards and follow all safety rules, practices, and project-specific safety requirements.
- Perform pre-task planning before executing work to identify potential hazards and ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Report any safety issues or concerns promptly to management and participate in ongoing safety training.
- Maintain, clean, and care for assigned equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure reliability and safety.
- Assist with scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites when needed to support project operations.
- Work under close supervision of higher-level technicians or professional staff while performing basic testing and observation duties, progressively taking on increased responsibility as training advances.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects by following established procedures and industry best practices.
- Check in with the Project Manager before the end of each shift to provide a status update on work performed, issues encountered, and planned next steps.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Geology.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to project sites in South Jersey, the Philadelphia area, Central Pennsylvania (including State College), and New York.
- Hands-on experience or strong academic background in soil sampling and geotechnical concepts.
- Ability to perform construction materials testing, including concrete testing, asphalt testing, and aggregates testing.
- Capability to work with and around nuclear density gauges and other field testing equipment in accordance with safety procedures.
- Strong observational skills to inspect reinforced concrete, structural masonry, spray-applied fireproofing, roofing, and related construction elements.
- Competence in preparing written and digital reports, including tabulating data and documenting observations clearly and accurately.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with project managers, technicians, client representatives, and contractors.
- Commitment to strict safety standards, including following safety rules, performing pre-task planning, and reporting safety concerns.
- Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining regular communication with the Project Manager.
- Organizational skills to manage samples, documentation, and daily reporting responsibilities.
- Basic understanding of laboratory procedures for construction materials testing.
- background in environmental science, construction management, engineering, or geotechnical disciplines is beneficial.
- Familiarity with construction materials such as steel, rebar, aggregates, and asphalt in a testing or inspection context.
- Experience working on construction job sites and understanding typical site practices and workflows.
- Ability to assist with scheduling and dispatching field technicians is a plus.
- Interest in building a long-term career in the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and progressively take on greater responsibility.
- Comfort using digital tools and software for data entry, reporting, and communication.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality standards on all projects.
The role is based out of a South Jersey office in the Moorestown, NJ area, which serves as the primary home base and regional hub. The Field Engineer travels regularly to construction sites across the Philadelphia region, Central Pennsylvania (including State College), and New York. Work is performed primarily outdoors on active construction job sites in a variety of weather and site conditions. The position follows a typical schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime available at times based on project needs. Much of the work is performed individually in the field, with daily check-ins and status updates to the Project Manager before each shift ends. The company emphasizes a strong safety culture with continued safety training, strict adherence to safety standards, and pre-task planning on all projects. Required attire for this role includes work boots, jeans, and a t-shirt, and a hard hat is provided for use on construction sites.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $26.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
