Cardiac Rehab Exercise Specialist

Job Description

The Cardiac Rehab Specialist works under the supervision of Director. The Cardiac Rehab Specialist evaluates, assess in-patients and out-patients referred to Cardiac Rehabilitation regarding readiness and response to exercise/activity. This position independently supervises and instructs patients in exercise prescription and progression and facilitates lifestyle modification through patient education.

Responsibilities

• Completes initial assessment of referred patient and daily assessment during activity sessions regarding patient cardiovascular response and ability to progress activity.
• Supervises the cardiac rehab inpatient and outpatient during exercise session in consultation with the R.N. to carry out safe and appropriate age-specific exercise prescription.
• Documents the cardiovascular response to exercise upon accurately obtaining the patient clinical data.
• Develops a plan for individual patient's educational needs, teaches and documents completion of plan
• Collaborates with Cardiac Rehab R.N. to coordinate the activities directed toward patient care delegated to other team members.
• Calculates and analyzes patient data to develop appropriate exercise prescriptions.
• Provides assistance with adaptation of exercise as required.
• Engages in patient/family and community teaching programs.
• Maintains professional standards by participation in inservices, committees, policy and procedure development, etc.
• Other duties as assigned

Education

• Bachelor's Degree - Exercise Science Degree or related health care field with emphasis/experience in facilitating lifestyle modification and wellness focus. - Required

Work Experience

• Acute care basic clinical data skills. - Required
• 1 Year - Experience in a hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation program or related health care area - Preferred
• Knowledge of EKG monitoring, basic arrhythmia skills - Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required Upon Hire
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Preferred Upon Hire
• Exercise Specialist or Personal Trainer - Preferred Upon Hire

Travel Requirements

• Must be able to travel between various system facilities and offsite locations as needed. - Required

Skills and Abilities

Essential Technical/Motor Skills

• Ability to type computer data, speak articulately to patients, families, physicians, and peers.
• Must demonstrate precise eye/hand coordination and fine motor skills for pulse checks, blood pressure, operating and calibrating equipment.

Interpersonal Skills

• Required to have good communication skills and good interpersonal skills for effective interaction with patients, families, physicians, and peers.
• Flexibility and organizational skills a must.

Essential Physical Requirements

• Ability to help lift equivalent of patient weight (150-200 lbs).
• Move/lift patients from wheelchair to bed or cart; push/pull equipment; reach 4-5 feet to demonstrate range of motion, walking and standing to demonstrate treadmills and monitor extended periods of time.
• Crouching, stooping, bending to obtain blood pressure while patient working on machines.

Essential Mental Abilities

• Must have good organizational skills that demonstrate ability to effectively accomplish a variety of clinical duties, prioritizing duties and decisions in a timely manner and adapt to rapidly changing situations.

Essential Sensory Requirements

• Ability to assess patient condition and response by visual observation, listening to patient verbalization and heart and lung sounds, and by touching skin and palpating pulses.

Exposure to Hazards

• Body fluids, needlesticks, electrical hazards.
