Job Summary A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. You are also essential in maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and ensuring its efficient running. Responsibilities include unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and operating the registers quickly and friendly to provide a highly professional service. Fill scheduling gaps when able, being flexible and responsive to the needs of the store. Approach work with positivity and energy, performing assigned tasks reliably. Operational Competencies Use varied technology—including registers, computers, tablets, and programs—comfortably and efficiently. Develop strong merchandising skills to maintain the book presentation and cleanliness of the store. Develop effective visual merchandising skills for gifting, toys, and other product categories. Operate the register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably. Support the receiving and unpacking of deliveries and the accurate shelving that follows. Find books and other products with ease and accuracy using available knowledge tools. Support the café team willingly and effectively when needed. Apply loss‑prevention procedures and de‑escalation techniques, identifying theft and seeking support for problematic behavior. Physical Requirements The role requires prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking. The employee may be asked to work at other stores as needed to support the wider cluster. Growth and Advancement As you gain experience, your book‑selling knowledge and skills will develop. You will contribute increasingly to the success of key sales objectives and may advance to the Senior Bookseller role, gaining further responsibilities and growth opportunities.
