Ag Mechanic - Operator

Fair Hill Farms is seeking a skilled Ag Mechanic - Operator to join our growing team in Chestertown, Maryland.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys both equipment maintenance and repair as well as operating advanced agricultural machinery in the field. Mechanical aptitude is a priority, and candidates with strong experience in either equipment operation or agricultural mechanics are encouraged to apply.

Fair Hill Farms is a family-owned and operated organic dairy and row crop farm located on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Our operation includes:

  • 1,000+ dairy cows plus youngstock raised in-house
  • 2,200 acres of crop production and pasture
  • Main dairy facility and satellite facility for dry cows and heifers

Position Overview

The Agricultural Mechanic / Operator will oversee routine maintenance and repairs for our dairy and crop equipment while also serving as an equipment operator during planting, harvest, manure application, forage harvest, and other seasonal field activities.

This role works closely with farm ownership and helps mentor less experienced operators and seasonal employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled service on farm equipment
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel systems
  • Maintain maintenance records and schedules
  • Maintain an organized and efficient on-farm shop
  • Manage shop and parts inventory
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues to minimize downtime
  • Operate farm machinery during planting, harvesting, forage, and manure application seasons
  • Assist with transportation and trucking activities as needed
  • Utilize precision agriculture technology and onboard systems
  • Help train and guide newer operators and part-time team members
  • Communicate effectively with management regarding equipment needs and repairs
  • Support both crop and dairy operations as part of a team-focused environment

Qualifications

Preferred Experience

  • Agricultural equipment mechanic experience
  • Diesel engine repair and maintenance experience
  • Farm equipment operation experience
  • Experience with John Deere equipment and precision ag technology
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills

Additional Qualifications

  • CDL or ability to obtain a CDL is necessary 
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and accountable
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
  • Interest in modern agriculture and continuous improvement
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
