Software Engineer

Tomorrow.io’s Space & Sensors team is responsible for the development of unique RF-based sensing systems, such as radar and sonar, from architecture through implementation. The team is also responsible for the development of corresponding spacecraft and constellations in support of Tomorrow.io’s Operation Tomorrow Space, which will collect data to be integrated seamlessly into our existing forecasting and modeling systems, revolutionizing global weather intelligence.

We’re looking for a Mission Operations Software Engineer to help us build a next generation commercial weather constellation for real-time, high-impact forecasting. In this role, you will develop the mission-critical software systems necessary to launch, deploy, and operate a fleet of scientific instruments in space, from Earth. Come join a group of engineers and scientists that dream on the IR spectrum, call astrodynamics “fun”, and could talk for days about why time is way harder than you think. Together, we will build the biggest weather platform in the world!

What You’ll Do:

• Develop the tools mission operators and climate scientists need to achieve mission success
• Support payload operators and scientists in achieving mission success
• Contribute to the definition of interfaces between various components (ground system to spacecraft, spacecraft bus to payload, etc.)
• Work with DevOps and IT teams on topics such as environments, deployment strategies, and security measures

What you bring:

• 4+ years of experience building production software
• B.S. in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
• Experience developing fault-tolerant, production-quality software
• Understanding of distributed systems architecture
• Intermediate/Advanced knowledge of Python (2+ years)
• Experience with AI-assisted development for planning, code generation and debugging
• REST API design, implementation and frameworks (aio Flask, etc.)
• Data modeling (Data Classes, Type Hinting)
• Databases and Python interfaces, with an emphasis on MongoDB and InfluxDB
• Intermediate knowledge of SQL, NoSQL, and/or time series databases
• Communication protocols (namedtuple, struct, socket)
• Quality assurance (pytest, mocker, PEP 8)
• Web applications: Typescript, React, HTML, CSS
• Platforms/Infrastructure
  • AWS (Elastic Container Service, Lambda, S3, SQS)
  • Terraform
• Intermediate knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes

Bonus Skills:

• Exposure to aerospace systems (i.e. satellites, airplanes, rockets)
• Exposure to satellite telemetry data processing (e.g., CCSDS)
• Exposure to satellite mission planning and resource deconfliction
• Knowledge of security best practices – secrets management, encryption protocols, vulnerability identification and mitigation
• Argo Workflows/Events
• Async I/O (asyncio, aio
• C/C++ experience
• Some knowledge of GCP, Azure resources
• Scientific computing (NumPy/SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib)
• Deeper InfluxDB experience and knowledge: schemas, database management, etc.
• Data visualization
  • Visualization platforms (Grafana, DataDog, Plotly Dash)
  • Graphics and plotting libraries (Plotly, SVG, Canvas, WebGL, D3.js, Three.js)

So if while watching a rocket launch broadcast, you try to catch a glimpse at what all those people on-console are looking at. When you hear “The space telescope is fully deployed”, you ask yourself “How did they do that from Earth?”. How many people did it take to get to the moon? It had to have been more than the three astronauts in the command module. If these are thoughts you find yourself having, then this is the team for you!

If you have reached this point and you are super excited but not sure you check all the boxes - we still want to speak with you! Your passion is priceless. Other things can be learned.
