Police Officer

Position Summary Sworn law enforcement position protecting life and property by enforcing laws, ordinances, and policy. Responds to emergency and non‑emergency police calls, performs community‑oriented policing, crime prevention, detection and investigation, apprehension of violators, preservation of order and related police functions. Position Number S-3863 Required Qualifications Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Current MCOLES certification or certifiable pending academy graduation. Valid driver’s license. Physical capabilities necessary to perform duties. Completion of training to become a certified LEIN computer system operator. Ability to accurately complete written reports. Maturity of judgment and ability to act with tact and restraint while using resolution techniques. Positive interpersonal skills. Effective communication skills and the ability to project a positive image. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree. One year of increasingly responsible work experience in public safety. Experience working in a higher education environment. Responsibilities Communication: Interacts with the public, co‑workers, staff, students, and other police departments; reports complaints, hazardous conditions, equipment issues, and emergency information; enters, transcribes, records, and maintains information; completes daily logs, dispatches personnel, and may testify in court. Decision‑Making: Reviews facts, literature, and law texts to determine if a law has been broken or an arrest is warranted; observes and analyzes situations; uses evidence from scenes; reviews policy and procedural guidelines; decides on vehicle pursuits. Staff Assistance: Provides backup and assistance to officers, supervisors and other agencies; instructs new officers; assists in specialized areas of police work. Investigation and Interrogation: Investigates crimes and motor vehicle accidents; reviews criminal and non‑criminal reports; collects evidence, administers tests, takes fingerprints, seizes and transports evidence, applies for and verifies warrants, follows up on pending cases, and conducts interviews and interrogations. Planning and Organizing: Develops plans to accomplish work and organizes time to meet deadlines. Patrolling: Patrols campus, locates emergency scenes, cites for violations, completes accident reports, assists motorists, directs and controls traffic, manages parking at events, cleans and fuels patrol vehicles, and provides escort services. Controlling Situations: Protects property, calms distressed persons, responds to violence or crime scenes, handles disturbance calls, enforces laws at special events, restrains suspects, provides medical assistance, establishes barricades, performs crowd control, and participates in building checks. Equipment Use: Operates telecommunication equipment, radar gun, handcuffs, video/audio recording equipment, first‑aid equipment, firearms, batons, pepper spray, and security‑checking devices. Policies and Procedures: Follows department rules, attends meetings, maintains appearance and fitness standards, completes legal forms, obeys state laws, participates in training, and provides security services as required; maintains communication with student service officers and external agencies, provides court appearances, traffic control, and safety presentations; performs additional duties as requested.
