SMC is actively looking for a Mid-Level Physical Security Designer to execute physical security access control, intrusion alarm, and video surveillance systems design for mission critical projects. Duties include producing device layouts, riser diagrams, device schedules, and cable schedules within Revit (BIM). Prepare cable schedules, Division 28 00 00 specifications, and support documentation. Typical project types may include greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise colocation clients, data center campus planning, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and other mission critical applications such as command-and-control centers. This candidate shall be capable of executing basic physical security access control, intrusion alarm, and surveillance design projects independently, taking established design criteria through generation of design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. The candidate shall also serve as a key contributor on larger complex mission critical projects under the guidance of a physical senior security designer. The scope is part of a broader project; thus the candidate should interface with design leads within SMC (mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, A/V, Controls) and externally with architectural, civil, structural teams. The ideal candidate will be comfortable mentoring recent graduates and junior designers reviewing the work of others, and collaborating with a physical senior security designer to implement broad project goals. Responsibilities This candidate will execute the physical security access control, intrusion alarm, and surveillance design for various project types while coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines, and will serve as the daily lead on smaller projects. They will communicate effectively with co‑workers and clients while meeting scheduled project deadlines. Design low voltage physical security systems including Electronic Access Control, Intrusion Detection Alarm, Video Surveillance, and Intercom systems. Design low voltage physical security infrastructure for mission critical buildings and campuses including campus perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) and vehicle and pedestrian entrances and exits. Produce complete sets of all phases of construction document drawings suitable for stamping and submission using Autodesk Revit (BIM). Maintain working knowledge of Access Control System (ACS) manufacturers and Video Management System (VMS) manufacturers and industry standards. Coordinate with architects and door hardware contractors on access control security design. Coordinate with all disciplines—ICT, electrical, MEP, and controls—for required security interfaces. Apply Division 28 specifications and industry standards. Coordinate power requirements with internal or external electrical and telecommunications engineers. Review and understand client standards and Basic of Design (BOD), design criteria, and applicable standards to apply them to a project. Understand local and national construction codes and project specifications. Use Microsoft Office tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams. Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours for major deliverables. Travel to project sites when required (less than 10%). Communicate clearly in written and spoken forms. Lead junior engineers, designers, and modelers, coordinating tasks of small project teams to deliver specific design elements. Mentor and train junior engineers, designers, and modelers in telecommunications design knowledge. Maintain excellent organizational skills and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Qualifications Education in an engineering or construction-related field, or equivalent hands‑on installation and servicing experience. Minimum of 4 years of experience in physical security design, heavily emphasizing Autodesk Revit (BIM) for drawing development. Experience with MEP or telecommunications firms, consulting roles, or construction will also be considered. Experience in access control, intrusion alarm, and video surveillance design for industrial and commercial buildings. Experience across the entire construction process—from schematic design through construction administration—including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and reviewing security contractor/shop drawings, and site visits such as condition surveys, observations, and punch lists. Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud. Member of ASIS International. Experience designing telecommunications systems is a plus. Knowledge of controls and monitoring systems for mechanical and electrical systems is a plus. Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD), Data Center Design Consultant (DCDC), Engineer in Training or higher. Compensation Base compensation: $75,000–$100,000 (Actual compensation may vary based on education, experience, skills, and/or location).
