This role plays a critical part in ensuring the quality and compliance of commercial, industrial, institutional, roadway, and infrastructure construction projects through field observations, materials testing, inspections, and accurate documentation.

Working alongside engineers, project managers, contractors, and clients, the CMT Technician will monitor construction activities, evaluate conformance with project requirements, and perform quality-control and contract-administration functions. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, detail-oriented, and interested in developing technical expertise through hands-on field experience and industry certifications.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret construction plans, geotechnical reports, project specifications, and applicable building codes.
  • Perform field observations, testing, and inspections on commercial, industrial, institutional, roadway, and infrastructure construction projects throughout the region.
  • Monitor contractor activities and document conformance with project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable standards.
  • Perform construction materials testing and special inspections during site grading and earthwork, structural fill placement and compaction, foundation bearing evaluations, cast-in-place concrete placement, reinforcing steel installation, and asphalt placement.
  • Collect field samples and perform testing in accordance with ASTM, ACI, ICC, DOT, and project-specific testing requirements.
  • Operate nuclear density gauges in accordance with company procedures, safety protocols, and applicable certification requirements.
  • Use concrete testing equipment to perform slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight testing and to fabricate concrete cylinders in accordance with ASTM and ACI standards.
  • Use other field testing equipment and devices in accordance with company procedures and applicable standards.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely field reports, daily observation reports, test summaries, and inspection documentation using company software and reporting systems.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, project managers, engineers, and clients regarding construction progress, testing and inspection results, non-compliant conditions, field observations, and recommendations.
  • Maintain testing equipment, company vehicles, and field supplies in safe and proper working condition.
  • Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment on active construction sites.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed throughout the service area.
What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means consistently delivering accurate testing, inspections, observations, and documentation that help ensure construction work conforms to project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, applicable codes, and industry standards. The CMT Technician will communicate findings clearly, document non-compliant conditions, and provide dependable field support to contractors, engineers, project managers, and clients.

The successful candidate will prioritize safety, care for company equipment and vehicles, complete timely and professional reports, and steadily build technical knowledge through field experience, training, and industry certifications. They will demonstrate accountability, organization, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a project team.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a project team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • One to two years of construction or construction materials testing experience preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with construction inspection and field testing procedures preferred, but not required.
  • Industry certifications such as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, NICET, ICC, or DOT certifications preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry materials and testing equipment in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including routinely lifting up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with team assistance or mechanical aids.
  • Ability to move and handle construction materials, testing equipment, concrete samples, and soil samples using proper lifting techniques and approved assistance devices when necessary.
  • Ability to perform frequent bending, hammering, lifting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, climbing, balancing, and other repetitive physical movements.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while performing field observations and testing activities.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed.
