Family and Community Engagement Coordinator Starting Date: Immediately Location: Central Office and Training Center A nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students, where more than 60 languages are spoken in students' homes. The district is home to Sumner Academy, ranked number 6 among high schools in the nation and number 1 in Kansas by U.S. News. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district is the fifth largest in Kansas and serves a student population that is 51% Hispanic, 27% African American, 11% White, and 7% Asian. Job Goal The Family and Community Engagement Coordinator serves as a resource and systems leader to all families, community members, district, and school staff. The Coordinator works to advance the district’s strategic priority to “Empower KCKPS Families and Community in Student Success,” across all campuses. The Coordinator reports to the Director of Family and Community Engagement and collaborates with principals, communications, school‑based family professionals, student support programs, and IT. Essential Functions Family Engagement Leadership Collaborate with district and school leadership to build a sustainable family engagement framework and infrastructure. Assist the Director in coordinating and facilitating family engagement work groups designed to engage diverse stakeholders. Plan and implement school‑specific and district‑wide family engagement events to build and strengthen relationships with families and the community. Collaborate with district and school leadership to develop and provide learning opportunities for principals and teachers, focusing on family engagement and building skills around evidence‑based practices and strategies. Develop and support school‑based FACE staff with professional development, resources, and coaching. Participate in the collection and input of evaluation data used to measure program effectiveness. Communication Collaborate with FACE staff to conduct ongoing outreach and listening tours with families to ensure their voice and engagement in the continuous improvement of the school and district. Assist in creating a district‑wide infrastructure, processes, and protocols that support two‑way communication and a continuous feedback loop between families, schools, and district leadership. Prepare reports for the Family and Community Engagement Director, Executive Director of Student Services and Family Support, Deputy Superintendent, and/or Superintendent. Produce and disseminate the monthly Family Engagement Newsletter. Work with District Language Support to assess the efficacy of school communication with families and ensure messaging is responsive to their needs, language preferences, and communication style. Direct Family Support Build relationships with local service providers and community agencies to expand the network of support offered to families. Develop and maintain a directory of community supports and resources. Perform follow‑up communication with new students and families through a case‑management approach. Support families to navigate the school system and connect them with community resources. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Welcome Center and Family Engagement or the Executive Director of Student Services and Family Support. Qualifications Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education. Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Education or a related field; Master’s Degree preferred. 3 to 5 years of experience working in education, family engagement, youth development and/or family services. Demonstrated success working with students and families of diverse backgrounds. Capacity to “hit the ground running” at the start of employment. Energetic, positive, and passionate about listening to and engaging with families, students, school staff and community partners. Working knowledge of the K‑12 landscape. Commitment and experience and/or knowledge about advancing equity. Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to work collaboratively within KCKPS and the community. Ability to think creatively, initiate and manage projects, and follow through on plans. Exceptionally detail‑oriented, organized, and deadline‑driven. Bilingual (preferred). Must be able to maintain positive interactions with parents and staff, and role‑model the values and expectations of our district. Effective oral and written communication skills. Communication / Organization: Maintains communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action meeting the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related work as required. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Language Skills: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public. Physical Demands: The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push items the same weight. The employee may occasionally visit a child’s home. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Work Environment: The noise level is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment. The employee is directly responsible for students’ safety, work output, and well‑being. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
