Prison Librarian, Evening Shift, Suffolk County Sheriff's Department, House of Correction (Boston) Under the direct supervision of the Education Director, the evening librarian assists in the administration and operation of the library at the Suffolk County House of Correction in Boston. The librarians provide inmates with access to library services and legal services in compliance with state and professional standards and constitutional requirements, support the institution's educational and rehabilitative programming, and share the Sheriff's Department's commitment to maintaining the safe and secure custody and control of inmates. The population served consists of adult male and female inmates convicted of crimes with a sentence of two and a half years or less, and pretrial detainees.

Responsibilities include supervising the operation of the institution library during the evening shift (1:30 – 9:00 PM), providing reference and reader's advisory services to the inmate population, maintaining and developing a general library collection for use by inmates, assisting in selecting and procuring library materials through new purchases and donations, maintaining and updating an adequate law library to ensure inmate access to legal materials including statutes, case law, legal reference material, and confidential discovery records, delivering library materials to special population units without direct access to the library, assisting in developing and conducting library programming, assisting in formulating schedules and procedures to assure all inmates have access to library services, providing inmates access to computers and internet content as permitted by institution policy, training and supervising inmate library workers, preparing reports and maintaining statistics, and working professionally with institutional custody and non-custody staff to support the Sheriff's Department's programming efforts and maintain a safe and secure environment.

Bachelor's Degree required. Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies, or library experience, or correctional education experience preferred. Comprehensive background check required.
