Import/Export Compliance Specialist

Import/Export Compliance Specialist Location: Camas, WA (Logistics Department) Reports to: Senior Supply Chain Manager Classification: Nonexempt Opportunity Are you a detail-oriented expert in global trade looking for a role with high impact? In this position, you will be the primary guardian of Furuno USA’s international trade integrity, ensuring that all import and export transactions are handled with precision and full compliance with U.S. regulations. This is a high-complexity role that offers immediate control over millions of dollars in organizational resources every month. Your work directly protects the company from compliance risks and facilitates the smooth flow of goods across borders. What You’ll Do Compliance Management: Maintain and update our critical classification database, including product HTS, Schedule B, ECCN, and country of origin. Logistics Coordination: Partner closely with freight forwarders to obtain quotes, book, and dispatch air and ocean shipments. Customs Oversight: Work with customs brokers to ensure accurate entries and documentation, and file timely Importer Security Filings (ISF) for all ocean imports. Duty Drawback Responsibilities: Manage and file U.S. Customs duty drawback claims to recover eligible import duties, taxes, and fees on goods that are exported, ensuring compliance with CBP regulations. Responsibilities include analyzing import/export documentation, preparing, and submitting accurate drawback claims, maintaining audit-ready records, and coordinating with logistics, compliance, customs brokers, and CBP to maximize refunds and minimize risk. Coordinate with SECO (Security Export Control Office): Support export compliance with SECO by managing export control classifications, sanctions screening, and export license applications to ensure international shipments involving designated military organizations meet all legal and regulatory requirements with METI. Responsibilities also include preparing and submitting required quarterly compliance reports, distributing SECO circulars to staff, creating the Dealer Export Declaration, and participating in the annual SECO evaluations. Risk Mitigation: Identify potential vulnerabilities in import/export processes, conduct investigations, and implement corrective procedures. Strategic Research: Utilize available customs provisions, such as protests and duty drawbacks, to benefit the company. Documentation: Maintain and update official import/export compliance manuals and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure standardized, compliant handling. What You’ll Bring Education: Minimum 2-year degree in business administration, import/export trade, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Experience: 2 to 3 years hands-on experience with U.S. Customs Brokerage, international logistics, and/or export operations. Familiarity with marine electronics or the Furuno product line is highly desirable. Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of customs compliance methodology, regulatory language, and import documentation requirements. Technical Skills: Mastery of Microsoft Excel (MS Office Suite) and strong computer research skills to digest technical product information for accurate classifications. Communication: Fluency in English is required; understanding Japanese or Spanish is a major advantage. Soft Skills: Self-starter with high initiative, patience, and extreme attention to detail. Travel: Minimal travel required. Working Conditions: Full-time, in-office position (no hybrid or remote options). Standard hours Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with potential occasional overtime. Compensation: 26.24 to 35.91 per hour. Annual bonus.
