Staff AI Cloud Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff AI Cloud Engineer based in the United States.

This is a high-impact technical leadership role focused on raising engineering standards across multiple teams and building scalable, production-ready technology.
You will combine deep hands-on engineering expertise with architectural leadership across AI, cloud, infrastructure, backend, and full-stack systems.
The role offers the opportunity to shape technical direction while remaining actively involved in designing and shipping production software.
You will partner with Engineering Managers and senior engineers to solve complex challenges, improve development practices, and establish practical engineering standards.
A key focus will be enabling reliable AI systems through modern approaches to model integration, orchestration, retrieval, evaluation, monitoring, and optimization.
You will also create reusable platforms, libraries, reference implementations, and engineering guardrails that improve developer velocity and operational quality.
This position is ideal for a highly experienced technical leader who thrives in a fast-moving environment and can influence teams through hands-on expertise rather than formal authority.

Accountabilities

• Define and continuously evolve architecture, engineering standards, and technical practices across multiple engineering teams.
• Partner with Engineering Managers, technical leads, and senior engineers on complex system-design decisions and high-impact technical initiatives.
• Lead technical designs, RFCs, architecture reviews, and critical code reviews while ensuring solutions remain practical, scalable, and maintainable.
• Build and ship production systems spanning AI, backend services, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and full-stack applications.
• Design and operate production AI capabilities, including foundation model integration, inference, retrieval, orchestration, evaluation, monitoring, latency optimization, and cost management.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, testing strategies, observability, reliability, security, infrastructure, and overall developer experience.
• Create reusable platforms, libraries, reference implementations, and standardized engineering patterns that help teams move faster and more consistently.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership during complex production incidents and contribute directly to resolving challenging infrastructure and system issues.
• Establish practical engineering guardrails and ensure they remain effective and adopted after implementation.
• Lead initiatives that transform ad hoc features and solutions into robust, scalable systems and establish stronger release lifecycle practices.
• Mentor engineers and technical leaders, raising engineering quality through hands-on guidance, knowledge sharing, and technical coaching.
• Influence multiple teams and stakeholders without relying on formal authority, becoming a trusted technical partner for engineering leadership.
• Reduce architectural duplication and recurring technical issues while improving developer velocity, system reliability, and operational excellence.

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience in software architecture, engineering, or closely related technical leadership roles.
• Experience as a founding engineer or in a comparable environment where you helped scale technology and engineering practices within a growing organization.
• Proven ability to influence multiple teams and drive technical decisions without formal management authority.
• Strong experience designing, building, deploying, and operating production-grade software systems at scale.
• Deep expertise across AI systems, backend or distributed systems, cloud architecture, and infrastructure.
• Practical understanding of modern AI technologies, including foundation models, inference, retrieval, orchestration, evaluation, latency, monitoring, and cost optimization.
• Strong working knowledge of full-stack software development and modern engineering practices.
• Hands-on experience with Python, Go, TypeScript, Kubernetes, and major cloud platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to operate independently, take ownership of complex technical initiatives, and work effectively across multiple teams and projects.
• Strong architectural judgment and the ability to balance long-term technical strategy with practical business and engineering needs.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and influence senior engineers and engineering leaders.
• A resourceful, pragmatic, and hands-on approach to solving ambiguous technical challenges and improving engineering systems.
• Ability to establish engineering practices that teams can adopt naturally rather than creating processes that become bottlenecks.
