The Role The New Mexico Municipal League is looking for a full-time Data Analyst to focus on data analysis related to municipalities, including tax and fiscal analysis, insurance claims, and risk management. The role involves collecting, organizing, and analyzing datasets; identifying trends and risk factors; and developing data-driven insights to support and inform executive leadership. The position also includes expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technical tools to improve data analysis and workflow efficiency. The Municipal League is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing and serving New Mexico’s cities, towns, and villages. In addition to serving 106 municipalities, the Municipal League also supports 12 professional “subsection” groups comprised of elected officials and municipal employees. The Municipal League also organizes and administers the New Mexico Self-Insurers’ Fund, which offers workers’ compensation, liability, and property insurance coverage to its members. For more information about the Municipal League and Self-Insurers’ Fund, please visit Job Responsibilities Collect, clean, and organize datasets related to insurance claims, risk management, municipal policies, or legislative activity. Conduct statistical analysis to identify trends and patterns in insurance claims, risk management, and related data. Support development of reports, summaries, and data visualizations to communicate findings. Assist in building and testing analytical or predictive models related to insurance claims, risk management, legal outcomes, or policy impacts. Utilize AI tools and emerging technologies to support data processing, research, and analysis workflows. Document methodologies, assumptions, and findings in a clear and organized manner. Perform other related duties as assigned. Skills & Knowledge Analytical and problem‑solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy. Experience with tools such as R, Python, or similar for statistical analysis. Familiarity with relational databases and SQL for data querying, manipulation, and management. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including experience with complex formulas, pivot tables, etc. Experience with data visualization tools and dashboard development such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms to present data and analytics clearly. Familiarity with AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) for research, analysis, and process automation. Strong written communication skills and ability to clearly summarize findings for both technical and non‑technical audiences. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a team environment. Understanding of municipal government operations, insurance programs, or legislative processes a plus. Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, business analytics, economics, computer science, public policy, or a related field. Master’s degree in a related field preferred. Two to five years of experience in a related field. Compensation Salary range of $70,000 - $110,000, based on experience and qualifications. Compensation includes a comprehensive benefits package. Other Information The work location is the Municipal League’s Santa Fe office, with some travel (once a month, on average) to other parts of the state for meetings and other events. This position reports to the Director of Data and Analytics.
