Registered Nurse (RN) NIGHT SHIFT
Location: Coastal Oaks Recovery, Port Royal, South Carolina
About Coastal Oaks Recovery
Located in the heart of the Lowcountry in South Carolina, Coastal Oaks Recovery is a 72-bed substance-use treatment center serving adults aged eighteen and older. Nestled on five serene acres near the coastal waters and wetlands of Port Royal, Coastal Oaks provides a tranquil environment for individuals suffering from addiction to stabilize and embark on their journey toward recovery and wellness.
At Coastal Oaks Recovery, we offer medically monitored detoxification under the direct care of physicians and nurses, supported by a multidisciplinary treatment team. In addition to withdrawal management, our residential treatment services provide a safe and structured environment for 30 to 45 days, ensuring that each patient builds a solid foundation of recovery skills prior to discharge.
Our evidence-based programming includes group therapy, individual counseling, family programming, and specialized care tailored to meet individual needs. With a holistic and experiential approach, we emphasize safety, collaboration, and a patient-first culture that nurtures recovery and wellness for both patients and staff.
Position Purpose
The Registered Nurse (RN) plays a pivotal role in providing exceptional care at Coastal Oaks Recovery. Utilizing the nursing process, the RN helps address the physiological, psychological, and safety needs of patients undergoing detoxification and residential treatment. As a leader within the treatment team, the RN provides supervision and guidance to other clinical staff while maintaining a people-centered, patient-first culture.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Assessment and Care
- Conduct initial and ongoing comprehensive nursing assessments, including medical and psychosocial histories.
- Assist in the self-administration of medications and monitor patient withdrawal signs and symptoms during detoxification and residential treatment.
- Provide compassionate care and address emergent patient needs with sound clinical judgment.
- Provide medication education to patients related to al medications to include psychoactive and withdrawal management medication side effects.
- Perform BACs and UDS-waived testing on all patients
- Assess the patient’s medical stability to determine the appropriateness of the level of care and treatment.
- Assess the patient’s overall acuity and determine criteria to support admission, continued stay, and discharge from a nursing perspective.
- Reconcile medication inventory and count each shift.
- Report any and all medication errors and incidents.
- Understand and initiate and or support medically compromised patients and their emergency transfer
- Provide CPR and First Aid to patients and staff if required.
- Provide medication education to all patients to include psycho-active medications and withdrawal management medications
- Facilitate and conduct group therapies related to hygiene, infection control, and nursing/medical-related needs of the patients.
- Provide leadership to all staff, including LPNs, BHTs, and others as assigned.
- Complete COWs and CIWA assessments regularly.
- Ability to report incidents and occurrences and evaluate the level of urgency for corrective action plans.
- Assist DON with scheduling for the nursing and BHT departments.
- Complete nursing discharge summaries
- Attend all treatment planning meetings while on shift.
- Attend all shift-change meetings before and after shift.
- Reconcile all medications/inventory prior to shift change.
- Assist in ordering supplies for the department.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Actively participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
- Supervise and mentor Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Behavioral Health Technicians, and other staff at all times.
- Facilitate a collaborative environment focused on patient and staff safety.
- Serve on facility committees that promote quality assurance, performance improvement, and all other Standards of Care when requested.
- Continue to educate yourself professionally as it relates to industry standards, facility updates, changes in laws, regulations, and the provision of nursing care.
- Support the clinical, medical, and therapeutic team and support patients attending all groups and sessions on the daily patient schedule.
Holistic and Evidence-Based Care
- Understand and participate in holistic approaches used at Coastal Oaks by the clinical, medical, and therapeutic teams to support withdrawal management, medical stabilization, and residential recovery, incorporating evidence-based practices.
- Promote and participate in the development of individualized treatment planning to address unique patient needs.
- Embrace an understanding of abstinence from all mood- and mind-altering chemical use related to patient care and be able to communicate the risks associated with the use of such chemicals post-treatment.
Education and Advocacy
- Educate patients about the process of treatment and communicate with family members updates as appropriate when and only if there are ROIs in place.
- Maintain all required HIPPA requirements and maintain the highest level of confidentiality as it pertains to HIPPA section 42CFR.
- Advocate for patient needs and collaborate with the treatment team to optimize care.
Compliance and Documentation
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of patient care in compliance with Coastal Oaks policies and procedures, The Joint Commission standards, and SCDHEC regulations.
- Adhere to Coastal Oaks Recovery policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Ability to audit patient records related to nursing notes and required documentation and report incidents, medical errors, and quality assurance issues accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ability to transcribe medical orders from physicians and mid-level practitioners.
- Maintain accurate medication counts for all patients and provide assistance to patients in the self-administration of medication daily.
- Provide medication education to all patients.
- Must engage with patients in the units and outside the nursing stations and offices and be proactive in communication on the units with patients and staff.
- Ability to educate patients on issues of hygiene and infection control.
- Maintain strong professional boundaries with all patients and staff.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
- Must have experience in taking orders from physicians and mid-level practitioners related to intake, admission, medication orders, and adding any and all orders accurately into the patient record.
- Ability to assess the physical symptoms of each patient related to their medical needs, nutritional assessments, and observation primarily through the process of a thorough nursing assessment.
- Ability to develop and update nursing treatment plans.
- Ability to assess the critical and acute needs of each patient through triage and determine medical stability, ambulation, and ability to process and participate in basic treatment programming at the time of admission.
- Must possess critical thinking skills and reasoning capabilities related to the functions of the position of a Registered Nurse.
- Extend dignity and respect to patients, staff, visitors, and stakeholders at all times.
Preferred Experience
- Minimum of one year of experience in substance use disorder treatment, psychiatric care, or related field (preferred).
- Knowledge of addiction treatment practices and medication management is a plus.
- Knowledge of psychotropic medications and medication management pertaining to withdrawal management and medical detoxification of patients with primary substance use disorder.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of verbal de-escalation and or management of aggressive behavior.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution. If nursing license was obtained in a state other than South Carolina, proof of Nurser Licensure Compact (NLC) with a uniform state where it was obtained.
Licensure/Certification
- Current RN license in South Carolina.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification required; additional certifications in substance use disorder or psychiatric nursing preferred.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to fifty pounds.
- Ability to manage mental stress and maintain a positive, empathetic demeanor in challenging situations.
- Extend compassion, embrace inclusion and diversity, and maintain calmness in a demanding environment.
- Work primarily indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
