Municipal Building Inspector: Codes, Inspections & On-Site

The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full‑time Building Inspector for the Planning and Development Services Department. Responsibilities As a Building Inspector you will conduct inspections of buildings in construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance with city building, electrical and mechanical codes and ordinances. You will interact with the public, advise customers on existing codes and ordinances, provide code information during or after inspections, maintain knowledge of International Building Codes, National Electrical Code, NFPA, applicable state and local codes, complete records and reports, participate in the development of specifications and standards, and provide on‑the‑job training to other inspectors. Regular on‑site attendance is essential, and you may be required to work as an essential employee before, during and after emergencies or disasters. Minimum Qualifications Positions are graded as Building Inspector I through Building Inspector IV/Code Specialist. Qualifications vary by grade as follows: Building Inspector I – Recruit: $51,022 – $58,675 No minimum experience required. Construction field experience preferred. Municipal experience preferred. High school diploma or GED required. Building Inspector II: $58,677 – $67,478 Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a certified building inspector, or 2 years combined experience as an inspector and related construction field experience, with primary experience focusing on building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical codes. Construction field experience required or completion of the Building Inspector I – Recruit program. TSBPE State Plumbing Inspectors License and State Medical Gas Certification required. ICC Residential Plumbing Inspector Certification. Municipal experience preferred. High school diploma or GED required. Building Inspector III: $66,019 – $75,921 Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a certified building inspector, or 4 years combined experience as an inspector, plans examiner, or related construction field experience, with primary experience focusing on building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical codes. Construction field experience is required. TSBPE State Plumbing Inspectors License and State Medical Gas Certification required. Municipal experience preferred. Building Inspector IV / Code Specialist: $74,422 – $85,585 Minimum of 6 years’ experience as a certified building inspector, or 6 years combined experience as an inspector, plans examiner or related construction field experience, with primary experience focusing on building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical codes. Construction field experience is required. TSBPE State Plumbing Inspectors License and State Medical Gas Certification required. Municipal experience preferred. High school diploma or GED required.
