Location: Newark, Ohio
Job Type: Full-Time / Part-Time / PRN – Flexible Scheduling Available
Pay: $18.00–$22.00 per hour, based on experience, qualifications, and applicable certifications
Reports To: Agency Management / Designated Supervisor

Our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) play an essential role in promoting independence, dignity, choice, community involvement, and overall quality of life.

Position Summary

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides individualized support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their homes and within the community.

DSPs assist individuals in achieving goals identified in their Individual Service Plans (ISPs), maintaining health and safety, developing and maintaining independence, participating in their communities, and completing activities of daily living.

Services and responsibilities vary according to the needs, preferences, ISP, and plan of care of each individual.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct support and supervision in accordance with each individual's ISP, service needs, and agency policies.
• Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), which may include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, personal hygiene, and other personal-care needs.
• Assist with meal planning, meal preparation, and dietary needs according to the individual's preferences and established guidelines.
• Support or perform medication-related and health-related tasks when applicable and only when appropriately trained, certified, authorized, and permitted.
• Observe individuals for changes in health, behavior, or overall condition and promptly report concerns according to agency procedures.
• Support individuals with mobility, positioning, transfers, and adaptive or mobility equipment when required and appropriately trained.
• Encourage independence by assisting individuals in completing tasks to the greatest extent possible rather than completing tasks for them unnecessarily.
• Promote community integration by supporting individuals with appointments, shopping, recreational activities, social activities, employment or volunteer activities, and other community outings.
• Provide transportation when required for the assigned position and authorized by the agency.
• Implement behavioral-support strategies and follow established behavioral support plans when applicable.
• Utilize appropriate de-escalation techniques and follow agency procedures during behavioral or emergency situations.
• Complete service documentation, progress notes, behavioral documentation, incident reports, and other required records accurately and within required timeframes.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, individual rights, and agency privacy requirements.
• Assist with household responsibilities related to the individual's needs, including light housekeeping, laundry, dishes, trash removal, and maintaining a clean and safe living environment.
• Follow infection-control, health and safety, emergency, and incident-reporting procedures.
• Maintain professional boundaries and treat all individuals with dignity, respect, patience, and compassion.
• Communicate professionally with individuals, guardians, families, coworkers, supervisors, and members of the individual's support team.
• Attend required training, meetings, and continuing education and maintain all certifications required for the position.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must successfully complete all required background checks and pre-employment requirements.
• Must complete and maintain all training and certifications required for the position and assigned services.
• CPR and First Aid certification required or must be obtained within the timeframe established by the agency.
• Previous experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities is preferred but not required.
• Must demonstrate compassion, patience, dependability, professionalism, and respect for individual choice.
• Must have effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Must be able to accurately complete electronic and/or written service documentation.
• Must be able to follow Individual Service Plans, behavioral support plans, health-related protocols, and agency policies.
• Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and reliable transportation may be required depending on the assignment.
• Must be able to safely perform the physical requirements of the assigned individual, including assisting with mobility, transfers, positioning, and personal care when applicable.

Scheduling

Full-time, part-time, and PRN opportunities may be available. Scheduling needs vary based on individual service needs and may include:

• Day shifts
• Evening shifts
• Overnight shifts
• Weekends
• Holidays

Availability for evenings and weekends may be required for certain assignments.

Work Environment

Direct Support Professionals primarily provide services in individuals' private residences and community settings. The position may involve personal care, household responsibilities, community activities, transportation, behavioral supports, mobility assistance, and other individualized services.

Because each person has different support needs, DSPs will receive information and training relevant to their assigned individual before performing specialized responsibilities.
