Employment Type: Full‑Time Shift: Days Exempt Status: Non‑Exempt Position Summary Horizontal Directional Drill Operators must possess the ability to safely and skillfully operate horizontal directional drilling equipment in the construction of natural gas pipelines. Operators perform duties as directed by foreman while operating drilling and associated equipment during installation, removal, or maintenance of underground utilities and pipe installation. Must meet physical requirements for significant laboring and be willing to listen and learn. Essential Job Functions Follow all safety policies and procedures per company and utility customer standards. Ensure all utilities are located within the bore path before performing blind boring; take extreme care with sanitary and storm sewer lines. Operate the horizontal directional drill and locating systems with minimal disruption to surrounding improvements and infrastructure. Understand directional boring principles, mixing and mud systems, use of vac rigs, and related procedures. Perform construction and maintenance duties related to the natural gas industry, including handling pipe, bags of material, and other heavy items. Lifting, loading, and securing material or equipment for transport from show‑up yard to job site. Carry out tasks such as jack hammering, shoveling, tamping, and installing pipe, duct, or cable. Secure work sites, equipment, and materials at the end of each shift to ensure public safety and protection of equipment. Inspect heavy equipment and document daily findings, including identifying causes of errors or defects. Monitor and assess information related to materials, events, or environmental conditions affecting heavy equipment. Perform daily vehicle inspection reports and equipment inspection reports as required. Participate in the JSA process daily and complete all mandatory drill documentation. Position Qualifications Must have at least 2 years of experience operating directional drilling equipment. Prior pipeline construction or pipeline laborer experience preferred. Knowledge of general hand tools and power tools preferred. Ability to work in all types of weather. Prerequisites Pass a pre‑employment drug and alcohol screen. Have personal transportation and a valid driver’s license; Class A CDL preferred. Ability to travel as required. Capable of lifting 50 pounds or more. Available to work long hours, weekends, and overtime when necessary. Pass a practical exam. Employee may be assigned additional duties as delegated to meet the needs of the company.
