About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse - Pediatric Psych Specialty: Psychiatric Unit - Pediatric Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing required. Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred. First-time travelers are accepted. License: Required state license Certifications: BLS, MOAB to be obtained on site Must-Have: De-escalation experience, experience with physical restraints (chemical restraints are NOT used), competency for medication passes, ability to run groups, and documentation skills Description: Immediate start is needed. Interviews will be conducted, followed by manager approval. Candidates must be willing to float between pediatric and adult units as needed. The facility has a total of 94 beds, including 50 pediatric beds and 44 adult beds. All patients are medically cleared and come from an emergency department. Involuntary and voluntary admissions are accepted. Pediatric patients range from ages 5-18 years, while adult patients are 18 years and older. Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria. Adults commonly present with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and anxiety. There are no forensic patients or inmates; the facility is secure but not designed to hold patients under arrest. Seclusion rooms are utilized when necessary. Occasionally, substance use disorder or detoxing patients may be present, but they must be medically cleared. The facility provides traditional medical and psychiatric care, along with specialized therapies such as pet therapy and group sessions. Patient ratios are as follows: RN: Day shift 1:5-6; Night shift 1:13 with resource support. Psych Techs: Pediatric day shift 6 Psych Techs; night shift 2 Psych Techs. Adult day shift 2 Psych Techs; night shift 2 Psych Techs. A nurse supervisor is available during evenings and weekends. A nurse manager is present during day shifts and is open to addressing any issues with travelers. A house administrator is available overnight and on weekends. Charge nurses may have patient assignments. Psychiatric rounds are conducted daily, and a psychiatrist is on call during the night. Occupational therapy is available seven days a week. Security is on site and responds to general safety concerns but not to patient escalations. The charting system used is Cerner and Pyxis. Travelers must be prepared to float between all units, including both pediatric and adult units. If a traveler is not comfortable floating to pediatrics, approval must be obtained from management. Weekend rotation is every other weekend. Call shifts are not guaranteed. Travelers are expected to work holidays as scheduled. A maximum of 7 days off may be requested, but accommodations may be needed if unable to cover all shifts. Travelers will sign up for preferred shifts, and the manager will review to ensure coverage. Years of service may be recognized with additional opportunities. Scrub colors should be any solid, professional shade. During winter conditions, heavy snowfall is expected. Travelers are encouraged to communicate their needs regarding de-escalation practice. Scenario-based training is available every other week for those requiring more experience.
